So I'm putting together a GoPro video editing machine for a friend. I've got an ASRock Z77 Extreme4 in a Cooler Master HAF 912 case. The case has a bottom-mounted power supply, two intake fan mounts on the front (2x120 or 1x200), two on top (2x120 or 1x200), one on the side panel and one on the back up top.

There are 6 fan headers as follows (3-pin unless noted):
2 CPU_FAN headers (one 4-pin)
1 PWR_FAN header
3 CHA_FAN (one 4-pin)

I currently have the CPU cooler connected to CPU_FAN1 (4-pin, directed out the top), the rear fan connected to PWR_FAN, the two top fans are on CHA_FAN2 and CHA_FAN3, the side fan is connected to CHA_FAN1, and the 2x120 up front connected directly to the PSU via molex.

I'm wondering if there's any danger in running a 3-pin Y cable for the fronts and tops so I can have control over them? Should I move the connector on one of the tops to the PWR_FAN header so the full-on fan is going the same direction as the CPU cooler? I can also get two good 200mm fans for about $30 so I only need one connector for the front and one for the top. Any suggestions?

Solution
Keep in mind that a 3-pin extender won't give you PWM control, but yes, you can use a Y-connector just fine.

That being said, the 200mm fans also give you the advantage of being much quieter.

Okay, sounds good. I was just worried about voltage control being off. Only the side and CPU1 are PWM, so no worries there.

I'll hit my buddy and see if he's cool with another $30, otherwise I'll just split em. I do think I'll put one of the tops on the PWR header to have the air flow directed better.

Thanks!
