I'm a student of Mysore university doing Masters in Animation. But my specialization would be Fluids, Dynamics, VFX and Video editing. Which AMD processor and GPU with it is the best? I've a budget of INR 10,000 or $185

That budget going to make it quite difficult for you to get into anything of real power. The best I could suggest would be an FX 4130 $109.99 with a HD 6670 for $65.99 or a Phenom II 965 $94.99 with a HD 7750 for $95.99.

Moving up to a budget of $250-300 would really gain you A LOT of performance gain of either of these combo's

In normal circumstances, you would want a relatively powerful CPU and GPU for your what you are doing. But due to your budget I would have to lean towards CPU. I would think the 4300FX would be a good start for a CPU at $119.99 (roughly 6500 INR). After that, I would look for the most powerful GPU you can get with the leftover money.

AMD APUs may not be a bad idea to look into.

Thanks, I'll work on my budget for better options. But If I go for FX 6 cores or 8 cores, the GPU unit for them would expensive right? I'm planning to get all at once, so budget really matters :??:

Nice. I'd agree with you. Now I'm using AMD Athlon X II, and can't simulate fluids or render quickly. All I've is INR 10,000 so I wanted to but best for it. even FX 6 cores and 8 cores are tempting me but If I buy one of them I can't buy GPU!:(

How much of the work that you do is actually GPU intensive ? If most of your productivity applications are CPU based and fairly threaded I would get into the FX-6300 with a small dedicated GPU as FX's dont have on board video. It will blow that Athlon II out of the water. Let us know what programs you use and we will be able to better assist you

Processors do not require a certain level of GPU according to their performance level.
I could use an old 8400 GS on my 6300 if i really wanted to do that.

Thats right. I frequently use Maya, 3Ds MAX, AE, PS, IL, Magix Video Pro, Real flow and for next semester Cinema 4D or Nuke. But as I've seen Most of them need CPU and some speed up with GPU. Realflow needs CPU and will not consider GPU to simulate.

After looking them over some of them are GPU accelerated but most benefit much more from having a faster CPU capable of handling alot of threads. I would suggest an FX-8350 but at your budget you will have to step down to the FX 6300 because you will have to buy a GPU of some sort as FX's have no onboard video and most of their motherboards don't either. The 6300 is still an awesome chip, I'm impressed daily with how mine just eats up everything it throw at it.

Alrighty then, I'll take all the possibilities and try to get addition to my budget so that I'll have GPU as well. Now my concern is to buy a Motherboard, Processor, GPU and retain my 1.5 TB HDD, 4 GB DDR3 RAM and pure 400 W SMPS. Thanks.

Great suggestion. But Is it good to have on-board GPU or external? Many of my friends told on-board GPU is always a problem. If this gives better performance for my applications, I'll go for it.

You don't HAVE to spend a ton for video and 3D, it just means you final renderings are going to take longer - maybe up to 2-3x as long. We used to do 3D editing and Video conversion on Athlon 1GHz processors and it worked, you just had to leave it running overnight while you sleep.

With your budget, I'd start with an i5 or an FX-8320 and then if you feel GPU acceleration would help certain apps, you can add that down the road. At least half of the ones you listed won't even really benefit from GPU acceleration.

I like having a discrete graphics card, but they are a minor benefit for non-gaming tasks (save for specific GPU accelerated programs) whereas having a faster CPU is going to be a major benefit for the kind of work you wish to do.

The best thing you can do right now for your work is get an FX6300. You'll be glad you have all those threads down the track and it's faster than a Bulldozer chip. I think you can deal with a 5450 for now... It is suffice for your CPU intensive work?
