More about restarting middle booting
  1. Possible heat issue - take a can of compressed air to the thing.
  2. Could be virus or bad program. Try safe mode. F8 on boot. If that fails, then try creating a bootable CD or flash drive.

  4. My best guess is that there is a problem from how something was written to the HDD from the memory during the last shutdown. Can't recall the process for XP, but there should probably be some kind of repair function like with 7. Hopefully you have the system disc still. Put it in and boot from that, then there should be an option different from "Install" that says "repair system" or something to that effect.

There is also the possibility of a virus, but with this kind of issue I imagine that possibility is remote.

If not then I can only hope you have a backup somewhere because I think you may need to do a clean install to get the system back up and running. Someone else might know how to handle getting into the system in Safe Mode or something like that to cleanup the registry.
