new HDD problem

I bought a new Western Digital Caviar Green 500GB the other day and fired it up with a fresh install of Windows 7 (windows is on my Intel SSD). I installed Steam on the new drive and while playing TF2 I was getting severe stutters every 30 seconds or so. I updated all my drivers and switched to the AMD beta driver for my 6870 but the problem persisted. So I copied Steam over to my OLD Caviar Green 500GB and the problem is gone.

Any idea what would cause this on a new HDD?

The Western Digital Caviar Green models are fine every day office use, where low price and energy efficiency is the prime goal, but for a gaming HDD its performance sucks.

if you want to do gaming, you should have bought a WD Black.

the Green only runs at 5400 rpm and is for office and data storage use

Use HDtune and benchmark both drives, running the error scan might not be a bad idea either.

I know it's a low performance drive but the point is my OLD caviar green works perfectly - they are exactly the same model. I only have a problem when playing from the NEW hdd
