Sony Vaio from Japan Optical drive not reading discs

I bought a Sony Vaio Z (vpcz11) from a US ebay seller and he said he bought it in Japan. It has a Japanese keyboard. The optical drive (matshita) is able to read and play burned dvds that were burned in the Philippines, but it won't read any DVD's : North America, even DVD R's that contain files and folders).

Is there a software fix for this? Will buying a replacement optical drive work?

DVDs are Region coded and America and Asia are two different region codes.

the lock is in the DVD drive's hardware; therefore, you should be able to switch the drive.

So it will only read burned data dvd recordables by optical drives that have the Asia region code, right?
  3. I havent seen this in a while but it could be a filter conflict. Is Nero installed?
