Last night I entered my office and smelled that oh so familiar sweet smell indicative of electronics frying! The power supply is dead so I'm assuming (hoping) this is the only thing that has failed. It wasn't a total surprise, this computer has basically been running 24/7 since around 2003 I think.

My question relates to the replacement PS. The original model number is: DPS-470AB (Delta Electronics) HP Part No. 345525-002. Do I need to buy this same PS or will any 500W PS work. Are the mounts/screw hole locations universal?

That power supply looks to be a normal ATX screw pattern, and doesn't have any proprietary connectors for power, etc, so a normal ATX power supply should work. Just make sure to get one with the appropriate connectors (8 pin CPU power and PCI-e video card power connectors) and of the same or greater wattage (name brand like Antec, etc) and you should be good to go.
