I was going to go with a amd 6300 for my new build, but tiger direct is having a one day sale on the amd 6100 for 60.00. The 6300 is 120.00 at microcenter. Should I save some money with the 6100 or still get the 6300?

FX 6300 is great. It's the exact same processor as the 8350 albeit with 2 less cores and lower clock speed. The FX 6300 is every bit as fast as the FX 8350 when both are at the same clock speeds and core usage.

+1 to that i miss my 6300, i upgraded to a 8320 and didnt notice much difference besides more heat haha

The hype will tell you otherwise but the fact is most programs don't use 8 cores so 2 cores hardly ever get used and just lye dormant on the 8320/50. I recommend the FX 6300 every time unless you use programs exclusively that can use the 2 additional cores but even then the time savings is negligible. It would have been nice if AMD brought to market a powerful quad core with high clock speeds and strong per core performance at a value price.

Honestly Bulldozer was a 5-10% improvement over Phenom II and Piledriver is a 5-10% over bulldozer. I don't get why people think these are massive architectural quantum leaps when they are small incremental steps into something bigger and better. Two small leaps from Phenom II to bulldozer to Piledriver = a good chip to make an upgrade from Phenom II to piledriver. Yes Bulldozer was faster than Phenom II just not enough to really make a sensible upgrade from Phenom II like Pilerdriver is.

Faildozer 8 core chips often lost to Phenom II X6's that were clocked much lower. Clock for clock PhII is faster than Faildozer or Piledriver. Piledriver's ability to clock so high is what makes them so much faster than PhII. Hence why I never recommend anyone with an overclocked Ph II to upgrade until at least Steamroller and instead get a better GPU.

Yeah, I'm still running a 970BE in my AMD rig. I've thought about Piledriver, but don't think it would be worthwhile. Faildozer was never a contender.
In any event, that one-day sale is over. What did you get?
If you didn't get either one, I think the 965BE might be just $80 at Newegg.
Oops no, that deal expired too; back up to $95 now.

If going with a brand new rig, FX 6300 is a good choice. A waste of money if already have a nicely clocked Ph II.
