I was clicking through eBay and saw pc with a HD 5870gpu for sale and the guy wanted a silly price for it I and him what the card was like out of interest (no intention of buying it)and he told me that he had it pared with a amd athlon 750k processor on an old motherboard and he reckoned he can play any game on ultra at 90-150fps now he didnt even say high setting he says ultra on things like battlefield 3 was one he mentioned ...when I said to him I think he's exaggerating and is ripping people off he became really abusive and told me I know nothing and to look up benchmarks ..which I have and I can't find anything to validate his claim ..I know its petty but he really pissd me off by being abusive ...am I completely wrong here and I'm the one who's a dick is this card and cpu capable of any game on ultra settings with 90fps min to 150fps max

the 5870 was a really awesome gpu. i have one laying around here i can't get working because my psu sucks... but otherwise it's a freakin' awesome gpu... somewhere around the level of a 7790...

it overclocks rather well as well.

That said, the only way he's pulling those fps with that cpu and gpu is if he has a monitor maxed out at 1024x768

if he's asking anything more then $100 for it, it's a rip. Its a power hungry and loud gpu... it's old now and used... and for about 150 you can get a better gpu brand new

I currently run that card paired with an i7 960 on an Asus P6T motherboard. I haven't played battlefield myself, and while I am overall very happy with the card's performance at 1920x1200, I don't think he is getting those results.

I don't really record my FPS playing, but here is at least a furmark screenshot at 1280x720 resolution (Yes, I have cooling issues, the fan broke on my card and I have a Noctua case fan tied to the card)

So does that mean that the 5870 can play any of the latest games with all settings on ultra at 90-150 fps....by the way I'm not buying it I'm just trying to win an argument ...I already own a gpu powercolor 7870 myst (Tahiti le) ..I'm just sure this guy is trying to exaggerate what his card can do in order for some poor sucker to come along and buy it..I figured without looking it up that the card being so old would be not up to those frame rates in the latest gpu intensive games...maybe Im wrong ..but I don't think I am...say its on what most people play at 1080p real world gaming ...that cpu is not great for games either ....I don't know maybe I'm wrong ..I thought a fx8350 with 7870 would struggle to hit those scores ..I have a fx8350 be the gpu mentioned but its all not built yet I'm still waiting on ssd and hdd anwaterc cooler to come ...o I don't know but judging from what ivbseen on YouTube etc people playing games how can a single HD 5870 from 2008/2009 be able to play games from 2013 at those speeds without being oc or anything ???? Idk

at 1080p? no that gpu won't do that. as i said, at 1024x768 resolution... yeah... i can believe that gpu can play those games on max settings at high framerates. It was a very strong gpu in it's day. I'm running an older 9800 GT (cause my 5870 isn't working atm thanks to my stupid psu) and playing modern games at very respectable and smouth framerates... and that card isn't as strong as the 5870.

understand modern game graphics have been mostly stagnent the last 5+ years as they've been built for the xbox360 and the like... furthermore, pc game makers try to make modern titles playable with the widest range of systems possible, so even modern titles will be playable on old gpus.

games like crysis are few and far between, the norm is for modern games to be playable and look good on old hardware.

ha! it was hot enough to boil water... 90C-110C

that thing tanked those temps like they were nothing though.

Your actually cleared 100C? Weird. Mine throttles quite clearly at about 90C, as you can see in the furmark temperature graph. Even without a fan attached it only hit 96C maximum.

I suppose my case must have a bit better airflow.

This is what my jerry rigging looks like by the way.
Nothing has melted yet! Although the 'black' plastic on the card itself beside the GPU core is an unhealthy white color...

i did almost the same thing... though i stuck one of those "single slot" case fans under the gpu... then rigged an 80mm fan up at an angle right on the face of the heatsink slant near where the blower fan was... and a blower in the slot above the card to suck all the hot air out of the case... as well as the side case fan blowing down on the card...

Until i stuck the 80mm fan in there it was easily clearing 100C... after the 80mm fan it dropped down to 80C...

I have 5870 1Gb with i7 2.6 GHz, 8Gb Ram, w7 32bit. My fan broke too. Now i have instaled giant passive cooling radiator + heatsink + noctua fan. Works like charm and it is quiet now. :)

This card play all (2012) hi end games (1920*1200) maxed out fairly good. 30-90 fps. Certainly not 90-150 fps. It also supports dx11.
If You buy it cheap it is great card. Only this fan is VERY loud (under load). And this loudly fan tends to broke. :(
