Hi All,

This is my 3rd or 4th system build so quite experience now.

2 weeks ago my pc just wouldn't turn on. So i went down usual route, and took it out and took it apart.

When i plugged in the psu , it would flicker for like half a second, then do nothing.

So i tested the psu with the paper clip test (joined the green and black wires) and it turned on fine, so i thought only thing could be was motherboard, so i sent that off for warranty repair.

I've heard back today that my motherboard was tested and nothing was wrong with it, so what is left, im guessing cpu?

I have tested the ram and gfx in another system aswell as my psu since , so i know its not them.
I dont have another amd board to test out my processor with.

My processor is an amd 8120 bulldozer.

Any suggestions/comments?

Thanks

sounds like the psu.. or your actual power switch

cpus don't usually die midlife unless the psu kills them or you bake it with poor cpu cooling or blow it by shoving too much power through it while overclocking... and the psu will only kill them if it's dying or junk.

since your cpu was alive until powerdown, i'd suggest its the psu or powerswitch on the case.

Hi, ive been using my psu in another system for the past 2 weeks since it broke, in the same (i went and broke a new
motherboard and i7) but im using old stuff for a home server, hence why i want to keep it.

I have done 0 overclocking with it, and also had a water cooler h60 , it was idleing at around 18 degrees, so cooling was ok too.

Which rules out power switch or psu i would say?

But yer ive had amd chips for the past 8 years and never has one broke on me.

nope. doesn't rule out either. if anything i'd say it makes it more likely.

so although my psu was working fine for 6 months, and it works fine on another board, it still could be faulty??

I double checked all cabling etc.. unplugged and plugged back in so i dont think that was an issue.

yes...it can still be faulty and a quirky PSU is much more possible than a bad motherboard or CPU. My PSU just went out and I even checked it with a high quality multi-meter...everything looked good...but the shut downs were soooo random. replaced the PSU and all is good

Oki thanks, I might hold out then i can't afford a new psu at the minute, it's only months old and cost me fair bit. Yer I have a crappy psu now test mobo when they send it back to me

go to a computer electronics store... buy a Dr Power, from the right merchant they can be $15, use it to test your psu. Its a good use of some pocket change.

for those who are interested.

It was actually my cpu,
i got my motherboard back and built my home server, would turn on but got nothing on screen.
So i swopped out my amd fx 8120 with my amd 955, booted up first time. im going to return the cpu
to amd to get it fixed
