ok so my laptop was connecting to the internet fine, then all of a sudden it wont. it says its connected, but no internet access. My Idevices work just fine via wifi, but my laptop will not work via wifi or wired connection. Ive ran the "cmd /k ipconfig /all" command, and this is what it returns to me:
"wireless LAN adapter wireless network connection 2:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
Description: Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter
Physical address:06-23-4D-5C-BC-BD
DHCP Enabled: yes

(Sorry that is the short verison. Im doing all this on my ipad while trying to work on the laptop so had to type all that out >_<)

ive tried the ipconfig release and the ipconfig renew, and this is what it returns to me:
"Windows IP Configuration
No operation can be preformed on wireless network connection 2 while it has its media disconnected.
An error occurred while releasing interface local area connections: the RPC server is unavailable.

An error occurred while releasing interface wireless network connection: the RPC server is unavailable.

An error occured while releasing interface Loopback Pseudo-interface 1: the system cannot find the file specified."

any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Solution
Try setting a static IP with these settings and see what happens.

IP Address: 192.168.2.150
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1

Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.2.1
Alternative DNS Server: 8.8.8.8 (This is a Google DNS server)

Give it a few minutes and hopefully we get success :) If nothing happens just change it back to Obtain IP Address Automatically

Here is a decent guide on setting a static IP - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/19249/how-to-assign-a-static-ip-address-in-xp-vista-or-windows-7/

it says
"resetting interface, OK!
restart computer to complete this action."
after restarting, it still is not identifying my network. i still get the same response after doing the ipconfig command.

Where a wired connection does the same thing something in windows networking must have got hosed. Goto the control panel open up network and sharing center what does it show for the network map and active network(s)? Have you tried the troubleshoot problems link?

Sorry about the long wait, wasn't home for a couple of days. But in the network map it shows my laptop, the line then it says identifying with the little clock, then a line with an "x" in the middle, then a greyed out globe. And for the active networks, all it says is "identifying".

You wouldn't happen to know the subnet of your network? Usually 192.168.x.x
If not then what make is your router as it's probably using the default unless you intentionally changed it.

If you know this plus the IP address of your router then setting a static IP is quite likely to solve the problem. More of a work-around than an actual fix but it will get you online.

Casper this worked and got me online, but i must admit, i am rather curious as to the cause of this problem. And thank you big nasty for your help as well. If either of you can figure why my laptop went skitzo on me I'd be appreciative. Like you said Casper its a work around not a fix, and I'd love to fix it.

Awesome :)

Well as you have probably guessed by now the problem is that your computer is not being assigned an IP address. Normally I'd look at the DHCP server first (your Router) but since other devices are working it probably isn't that.

I'd start by making sure the DHCP Client service is running.
-Hold down the Windows Key and press R
-Type services.msc in the box that appears and click ok
-In the list of services look for DHCP Client. It should have a status of Running and a startup type of Automatic.
-If not you can change this from right-click > properties

If that doesn't work maybe try disabling the firewall temporarily to see if that is interfering with things.

For the dhcp client, it says that it's not started. when I go to start it, it says "windows could not start the dhcp client service on local computer. Error 1075: the dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion."

Ok so we know the problem now! That service needs to be running.

Next thing is to check if the dependencies are running. On my computer the dependencies of DHCP Client are as follows:
- Network Store Interface Service
- Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
- RPC Endpoint Mapper

Open up services.msc in the same way and locate these three services. They should all have a status of Running and a startup type of Automatic. If not - change it :)

Let me know how it goes.
