Carefully check all the components in those barebones systems. Often (usually?), they will bundle in a crappy part (PSU or case). Meaning you have to go buy that part again to get what you really want.

If you are new to building then buying everything from one place and asking about compatibility before buying would be one way to ensure you have some comeback should you get a compatibility issue.

Aside from that bundles can offer some good value but I find its rare that they bundle the parts you actually want. Usually a decent Motherboard with cheap Ram or headline Ram with a weak CPU and a So-So Motherboard. You do get compatibility though.

Personally I am happy to buy from various sources as you can save quite a bit if you have a good idea what
you want and are willing to wait for deals on parts.

If you are nervous about getting it wrong then make a wish list and post a thread asking what people think and if they would change anything.

There are plenty of helpful people on these pages that will be only to happy to help out.

I buy parts 1, 2, or three items at a time. I always try to buy items when they are the cheapest. and sometimes it takes 9month's to a year to put something together 100%.

if it's a new build I'll buy the core components (mobo/cpu/ram) and use other parts laying idle to put something together before I finally finish the build.

whatever, buy a 64bit operating system and try to budget for an SSD.
