XFX 7850 2GB thermals

I recently purchased the XFX 7850 2GB core edition and I've been extremely happy with the performance of it. However the thermals are concerning me.

I own the Corsair 550D, a silent case, and with all the panels on, my tempratures during a furmark burn-in test level off in the low 80's C. When I add two side fans (a lot louder) the temps drop to 77's.

I was hoping that the problem might have been the factories thermal paste, so I purchased some AS5 and applied it and my thermals didn't change at all.

Are these temperatures normal? I was hoping to crossfire in the future, but if its hitting 80 now, I'd be afraid of what two cards would do.

My options from here are:
1. I'm paranoid and these temperatures are perfectly normal.
2. Sell this card and get a different card with a better stock cooler.
2. Invest in a new case with better airflow.
3. Invest in a new vga cooling solution.
4. Invest in new case fans.

Solution

I hear lots of bad things about xfx. I am sorry but your cooler is defective.

For me to stay in the low 80's high 70's I have to crack my fan speed up to 100%.

I wonder if its a card problem or a case/airflow problem. Even with my side door off (or pointing two fans directly onto the GPU) the temps stay in the mid 70's. So my inclination is to say its a card problem.

If your willing to go that far then I would take the cooler of the GPU and see if it is installed properly with thermal grease. Also you can probable RMA that GPU for free or just the cost of shipping.

I already reseated the cooler and applied new thermal paste, temperatures were exactly the same.

See if you can RMA the card. If not you are forced to acquire a new card. Look for a used card on the cheap or Open Boxed refurbished deals are always a good idea IMO.

Past the 30 day warranty, unfortunately I spent too much time assuming I was the problem.

WTF ! xfx only offered you a 30 day warranty that the GPU would be in working condition for you ? If so thats BS and I can see why xfx has such a bad reputation now. Please next time when you buy a PC component go with a reputable brand that offers excellent service and warranty coverage.

No no, you misunderstand, Newegg has a 30 return/refund policy. XFX has a longer warranty, couldn't tell you how long as I'm at work right now.
