I currently have two monitors plugged into it, and while idle, the average temperature is around 60-65. When i unplug one of the monitors, it drops pretty heavily, down to 40-45. Is this common?

Also, I'm looking to just cool it down in general. I want to buy an aftermarket cooling device, such as a fan to put on it. Is this complicated to do, or fairly easy? In addition, where can I find if a fan will be compatible with my card.

You can look into getting liquid cooling.

TTT Custom Computers makes brackets so that you can install CPU closed loops onto a GPU.

This video is of a 6950 getting the treatment.

I've not yet done this, but I will once I get some spare time.

As for the temps, I'm not sure at all what's happening. My 6950 idles at 33C, and gets to 60C on gaming load, but I only use 1 monitor.

I was looking for something more like a fan. Liquid cooling looks fairly complicated. Would a fan be able to lower the temp significantly?
Also, where can i find ones that compatable specifically with my card

By the way, what have you done to your fans? I mean, have you tried setting them to their highest settings to get the temps down?

For just a fan cooler, this Arctic Cooler is a decent price, and have thermal paste included. It of course lists the 6970 as a compatible GPU.

I only suggested the closed loop water cooler because it is in the same price bracket as this fan cooler. If you are happier doing something easier, then I'd (guess) Arctic cooling has you covered.

To be clear, I've never used one of their coolers, so take everything I say about them with a grain of salt.

i downloaded msi afterburner, but to keep the temp down around 40 the sound gets incredibly loud. considering it is in the same price range, the liquid cooling would be more efficient and less noise correct? im debating whether or not id even be able to do it :/

If the video seemed intimidating, you might not want to do the closed loop solution.

The closed loop solution is the cost of an H60 plus the cost of the bracket and a spare 92mm fan. That's about $80, plus shipping and taxes. $5 less if you already have a 92mm fan.

The arctic cooler I linked earlier was about $65 plus shipping and taxes.

The arctic branded closed look cooler was over $150.

Maybe I should state this again. I don't know what is causing your problem, and this feels like a band-aid solution. I worry I haven't actually helped you solve your real problem, and that's the cause of the over heating.
