Do I need a new CPU

Well, I got a new card, a 7950, and I noticed an increase in FPS from my old card (GTX 460 1gb), although it wasn't too much, maybe 5-7 FPS. I also notice that my non OC temps are around 65 during games, and GPU load is usually maxed. So I want to know if it's just like a defective part (which I doubt it is, but I just want to make sure so if it is I can return it before activating the bonus games), or a CPU problem, which I am led to believe.

So here are my specs:

AMD Phenom II X4 3.2Ghz quad
HD 7970 3GB
1680x1050 monitor
8gb DDR3 1333 Ram (limited to 3.5gb due to 32 bit, ordering a 64 bit though).
biostar a880gz mobo

Thanks

If I do need a new CPU, would you all recommend the AMD-FX series? I was thinking about a FX-6300, but tell me what I should if necessary!

You need to overclock your cpu, yes you are experiencing cpu bottleneck.

You could jump to a 6300 + aftermarket cooler for overclocking, that would be best to partner with your 7970 if you want to keep your motherboard and it is compatible with it.

Okay, thanks for your feedback. I've actually tried multiple times to overclock, it seems like my BIOS won't let me. If I can't figure it out, I may aswell go to a 6300.

That's what I took into consideration. I realized if I could get fps in the 60's, then I will probably get a better monitor.

What games are you playing? a HD 7850 or GTX 660 are more than capable of delivering 60+ FPS on most games at 1680x1050.

Bioshock Infinite, League of Legends, Skyrim...
All get similar fps to my old card...
All average around 30 FPS. Could ram be a possible factor? I didn't think most games used more than 4gb though... TBH if I need to upgrade something, it's not too big of an issue, unless it's like making a switch to intel. Thanks.

- I'm pretty much good for anything to get it running to full potential. I was pretty disappointed to see the tiny change in FPS after spending $300 on a new card :(

Thank you. Thank you so much for this brilliant answer! I was "Lion". See I can be funny too? No, that was completely unnecessary, and gave me no assistance whatsoever. I hope you got a few seconds of excitement from that miserable excuse of a solution.

My kids machine has an OC'd 965BE in it . . . it's garbage in pretty much everything you throw at at. I recently got a hand me down 7850 in it, which was up from a 6870 . . . the CPU is slow slow that nothing changed.

My answer stands.

LoL isn't very GPU intensive.

Do you think it'd be worthwhile to switch to like an i5 2500k? I'd need to get a new mobo, but wouldn't be a big deal I guess.

Drop your GPU down to a HD 7850 or GTX 660 and pickup a FX 6300 or even a FX 8350 if you are contemplating switching to an Intel build.

Okay, thanks! Well, if you ever get around to answering this, (this may sound really stupid), but would there be a downfall to keeping my 7950 and getting an FX 8350 instead of going to the HD 7850? Just curious.

No downfall, should consider upgrading the monitor if you plan on keeping the 7950.
