Powercolor 7870 myst. ed. Artifacts in BF3

So I recently bought a powercolor 7870 myst. ed. and I have had a problem with it so far... Whenever I play BF3 campaign I get artifacts a lot, little black triangles (sometimes large triangles) shooting down the street and pixelated checkerboards in shadows sometimes. Specs and settings below.

FX 6300 @ stock settings ( not overclocked at all)
ASUS m5A97 r2.0
powercolor 7870 myst. @ stock settings (not overclocked at all)
8gb ddr3 1333
corsair CX600w

Settings are: 1920x1080p, Ultra preset, Vsync on, Motion blur on, FoV 90

And i monitored my temps throughout all the artifacts, and it seems its only 67c degrees when the artifacts are occurring.

I was curious to see if it did this in any other games and so far I have tested Metro 2033 @ max settings with no artifacts, I ran MSI Kombustor with 8x msaa, 1920x1080p on a stress test and it only got to 70c degrees with no artifacts either, and I am about to try Farcry 3 Max settings.

I haven't tested drivers yet though, I am running on the beta 13.3 drivers.

If you all have any suggestions it would be highly appreciated, or did I just get a defective card and I have to RMA it?

More about powercolor 7870 myst artifacts bf3
  1. 67C on what? the cpu or gpu...

check out your cpu temps... BF3 is mostly cpu dependent not gpu dependent... the other titles you mentioned are more gpu dependent... which leads me to think your cpu is overheating.

but yeah... artifacting graphics is usually a bad sign... either the gpu isn't working right or the drivers aren't... have you tried it with vsync on?
  2. Try different drivers first, but sounds like you got a bad card. Hopefully you can still RMA through the merchant (Newegg?) and not the manufacturer.
  3. So I finished my Far cry 3 testing and I did also experience artifacting.

67c on the GPU, and BF3 Campaign is more GPU dependent. And yes It has been with Vsync on
  5. What if you underclock the GPUs core and RAM by 100mhz each?
I suspect you will need to RMA though.
  6. Have you checked vram temps?
  7. It's a PowerColor so problems are bound to be apparent.

I haven't had problems with them from the past.... I have bought 2 other cards from them

    I will try this soon.

I have and so have to many others.

So I did this and they are still present.
  12. So it seems like an RMA is inbound.
  13. I ordered this card from Amazon. They have an option to receive a full refund. This card came with the AMD Never settle bundle, with Bioshock Infinite, and Tomb raider. However I have not redeemed them. So if I ask for a full refund how will that work? (because of the game bundle)

That would be something to work out with Amazon.
  15. So It seems that since it came with the bundle, I can't get a full refund.... damn, looks like its attempt #2 with my video card. maybe this time it will work.
  16. Can't you return the game codes with the card?

They Emailed the codes to me...... Also I have heard reports that if you get a refund they still charge you for the game bundle, like $100 or something equivalent for the price of the games. So I would only get $150 back in refund. So with that being said the only option is to get a replacement, which is better then spending an extra $100 on the same card again.
  18. Here is my worry about the 7870 myst, they have a more powerful gpu and all with only a single fan and two/three heatpipes, while my 7870 hawk has 5 headpipes, complete cooling, and two fans that have a max of 4500 rpm. I always worried about the cooling on the myst, so it might be the vrm or vram not being cooled properly.

How would I check the temps of the vram, I use MSI Afterburner and I can't seem to find the temps for that.
  20. I can outright confirm its defective now..... I was on the desktop and randomly the drivers crashed and there were artifacts everywhere.
  21. yeah. return it bro... bad gpu.

The single fan thing is long in the tooth. One fan is better than 2 or more because one larger fan makes less noise and moves more air than two smaller and noisy fans. The GTX 690 has one fan and so does the GTX 680.
  23. Use GPU-Z to check the vram temps.

It was sitting around 65c degrees max when playing bf3 on ultra while it was artifacting like a monster.... Usually if a card sits at stock clocks and still artifacts, doesn't it usually mean its faulty if switching between multiple drivers doesn't solve the problem?

eh can't really troubleshoot anything currently, It's already up for RMA to Amazon for a replacement
  25. Sounds like a bad card for sure. A replacement should be good, hopefully the next card will be good! If you haven't taken the card out yet though, you could give the 13.4 WHQL drivers or 13.5 beta drivers, just for completeness.

Ye I did, I tested first on beta 13.3 : artifacted, tested on 13.4 : artifacted, tested on 13.5 : artifacted, Thats when I finally pulled the trigger on the RMA.

It's really upsetting to build the computer and then the very next day when you download a game it artifacts.

well nothing to do now but wait i guess and use my previous card, my "Powercolor" 7750
  27. At least you can do a quick RMA with Amazon. I'm still in the RMA process with Sapphire. It's been about a month without my card. Did Amazon offer you cross shipping?

Cross shipping? As they send out a new card to me while I mail back my old card? If so yes, and I should expect a new card between the 30th and 5th
  29. That's good, you won't have to spend too long with your 7750 :P

ye my 7750 isn't too bad, I could play games at 1080p just not with high settings like low - medium.... but I also was using it with an athlon x2 255 @3.1ghz before so that definitely was crippling it....

I loaded up BF3 with my new CPU and my 7750 and I could actually get more than 30 fps at low, now I get like 70 fps at low
