Hey. I'm new to the forum. Been wanting faster load times. But can't decide which one to get. SANDISK EXTREME SSD 120 GB? or SAMSUNG 840 SERIES 120GB? Any thoughts?

Solution
fil1p, she is explicitly referring to the Samsung 840, not the pro. This is shown also by the drive size: 120GB. The 840 pro series equivalent is 128GB.

The 840 uses a new type of NAND, TLC, which will not last as long as the older technology, MLC. However, it is cheaper per byte stores, hence the reason why it is used.
However, as you can see by this test here:
http://uk.hardware.info/reviews/4178/hardwareinfo-tests-lifespan-of-samsung-ssd-840-250gb-tlc-ssd-update

a samsung 840 will last long enough for any normal use. Even if you wrote 20GB per day to the drive, it would still be expected to last 20 years (and counting) from this testing.

Samsung is a well trusted brand, and you would do well to go with any of their SSD's...

Hey,

I would go with the Samsung 840 for the following reasons:

1. assuming you are referring to the Samsung 840 Pro; it is one of the fastest drives on the market.
2. The entire SSD is made by samsung, everything from the memory chips, to the PCB, to the SSD controller is made by them. That means better reliability as all the parts come from them and not multiple suppliers.

Hope this helps!

Further, speed-wise the current generation of SSD's form a tight performance cluster. Outside of synthetic benchmarks that artificially inflate small differences in performance, the average user would never be able to tell the a top SSD from a middling SSD if they were using it.

Samsung has the best SSD's out right now. I own the 250GB Samsung 840 and it only cost me 179.99. Comparing that to the 229.99 some other drives cost and that's a steal. And this drive comes close to the top in performance even though it uses different nand. It's close to the 840pro in reads.

I also own the Crucial m4 256GB, Crucial m4 64GB mSATA, and the Kingston HyperX 120GB. They are all some good reliable drives. But the Samsung performs the best out of all the benchmarks. I have a feeling the Crucial's will last the longest though, that's why I have it in the system I use the most. Crucial is by far the most trusted name brand out there, even better than Samsung. But you can't beat Samsung's prices, and if you need a laptop SSD, then Samsung is the most power efficient there is.

As far as pricing, if you can't find a 120GB 840 for 89.99, then look elsewhere. If your looking for a 250GB, try to find it for 179.99 or look elsewhere. You should be able to find those prices fairly easily as I did, and like I said, if you don't get that price then try a different website.
