Internet Randomly Stops Working

Hey guys, I was hoping you might be able to provide some insight in a really annoying problem I've been having. From time to time, my internet will completely stop working. This is only fixed by a complete system reboot as far as I've been able to tell. I tried disabling and re-enabling the adapter, right-clicking the adapter and running the Diagnosis tool, and logging out and back into my user account, but none of those fix the problem. On a driver related note, does it matter whether I use the network drivers from the mobo manufacturer (Asus) as opposed to the drivers from Intel?

This leads me to believe that it's either a drive or hardware issue, but I don't know a ton about this stuff so I can't be sure. As far as I can tell, the problem also occurs completely at random, where sometimes I'll go days or weeks without a problem and then one day it'll happen multiple times.

The two programs I have that seem like they could cause problems with this are Internet Download Manager (IDM) and NetLimiter 3. I would uninstall them to see if that fixes the problem, but I rely on them so much that I don't want to remove them since I don't have an easy way to tell if removing them actually fixed the problem.

Anyways, if anyone has some advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Computer specs:
i5-2500k @ 4.5GHz
Asus P8P67 Pro
Radeon HD 6950 2GB
256GB Samsung 830 Pro

There a lot of reason it could happen, most of it because of the isp/network itself..

the other is because of the router is overheating, (u can try cool it with fan or something)..
other is because the connection is clogged up by partial open connection try limit the connection to each server...
(try setting the bandwidth/connection limit in the IDM)

To clarify on a few of the points you mentioned:

1. Yes, I am hardwired into the router. However, I am leaning towards it not being the router since my roommate is also on the same network and hasn't had any problems (although he is using wireless). I also feel like overheating wouldn't cause an issue that was fixed with a quick restart of my computer (literally takes less than a minute since I'm running on a quick SSD).

2. The problem has never occurred while I'm downloading something with IDM.

3. I haven't yet tried to wait it out and see if the connection restores itself after a while. If it goes out while I'm not doing something crucial next time, I'll see what happens in that case.

Check your firewall, my free Comodo something go crazy
Check your hardware, maybe something wrong with the wires
Contact your internet service provider

I'll check in with AT&T tomorrow and see if they have any advice to give. The wires themselves look fine and the firewall is also probably fine since I'm just using the Windows firewall. However, I'm still inclined to think it is a problem with my PC since it doesn't affect the rest of the network.

Also, my roommate is actually using a wired connection, not wireless like I said earlier.

try using the network one at one time for testing purpose, just u for 2 hour, don't let your roommate to connect with the network...
if it still had problem even u are alone then it not bandwidth sharing problems....

try limit the connection in the IDM, some router had firewall/defense mechanism, try will try slowdown/clog when to many request sent...
