I have a box with a AsRock z77 extreme4 motherboard. Just got a new headset, which is a Razer Tiamat 7.1. Both devices state they support 7.1 channel surround. There is however a mismatch between the 5 cables from my headset and the 5 audio ports on my motherboard.

Headset:

* Out
* Mic
* c/sub
* rear
* side

Motherboard:

* Out
* Mic
* c/sub
* rear
* in

They all match (inc the color codes), except the last one. Instead of having a gray "side", it has a blue "in". Heh? I tried connecting both with the "side" in "in" and with leaving it out altogether. Both results sound somewhat odd to me, so I figure something is wrong. I don't know if this is in fact caused by an issue with how I connected it, or by something like missing drivers. Since this is my first surround headset, I'm not even sure it actually sounds wrong. Any hints on how to correctly connect this and further verify it is working correctly are much appriciated.

I'm running Kubuntu 12.10 x64 as OS.

There should be 4jacks for 8 channel or 7.1 channel surround. But I guess you can use in or mic jack for side speakers. All you need to do is install The Realtek drivers, after installation click on the slot where you have connected your side speakers pin in your motherboard and change the slot to side speakers.
