CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965
GPU: MSI N660 TF 2GD5/OC
PSU: Thermaltake TR-600P
Motherboard: ASRock 970 Extreme3
Ram: Corsair Vengeance 8 GB DDR3-1600 Kit

Hey,
above i have posted my friends specs, he has been having allot of problems playing games on this PC, problems like ingame lag and dramatic FPSdrops. he just build it himself and installed a Pirated version of Windows 7 at first, but after all the complaints he had about the lag i advised hem to purchase a legal copy of windows8.. so he did that and he installed it, but still having the same issues with lag spikes and FPS drops... we cant figure out what exactly is causing the problems... any help, tips or advice is appreciated
thanks

note: the games he has tried and is having problems with are games like Bioshock infinite, Blacklight Retribution, Warframe etc...
Also note that he does have the latest Nvidia drivers, so thats not gonna help

a Thermaltake 600W is listed.

Thermaltake is usually in the 'so ok its average' quality level.

Oops i must have missed it. With thermalttake(just like coolermaster) it depends on the model. There some some ok units and they also make some really crap units. The TR2 series like listed above is a crappy unit has massive noise issues on the 12v rail and cant deliver its rated power. The noise issue on these units have been know to damage the other components in the system. I would highly suggest replacing it asap with a better unit from brand like Seasonic, XFX, Corsair, or Antec. Here's a link that provides some info on which brand and model to get and which to stay away from.

I guess OCing GPU will increase FPS. Use MSI Afterburner to OC. The 970 isn't the best chipset. I suggest a 990FX Chipset Motherboard. Also buy a good CPU cooler like the Cooler Master Hyper TX3 or a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. If that doesn't help , Get those parts checked. As bignastyid said , Thermaltake is not the best PSU brand. I recommend a SeaSonic or Corsair PSU. They are awesome.

They are in some certain areas of the game, but its not from the games it self, it cant be because we tried setting the game on lower res/graphical settings, still lagged

it seems to me that no one is 100% sure if its the PSU, you guys are just suggesting it... i could tell my friend to go and buy a new PSU but if it didnt work and he still gut the same problems, his gonna be fucked... this is a budget PC if you haven't noticed... at least i would like to know how and why do you think its the PSU.. note that i know its a cheap ass PSU and i advised against it before he bought it (<<i told you so jokes here)

mostly we're just guessing, to be honest. its best to try different parts to test things. if you have a GPU to spare of similiar ability, you can test that.

from the descriptions, its either the PSU or the GPU. swapping both to see what happens is the best way to check

Yeah , you are right. I guess PSU and GPU are mainly the problem. Try changing the PSU first.
