Corsair TX850 makes "scratching" noise whenever fan attempts to spin/twitches.

Hi all,

I recently built myself a new PC, primarily for gaming, and have noticed that a high pitched mechanical 'scratching' noise is coming from inside the case whenever the fan on the PSU twitches or moves.

The specs for my PC are:

- Asus P8Z77-V Pro
- Intel i5 3570k
- XFX 7970
- 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM
- Corsair 850TX PSU

I previously RMA'd the PSU to the company I bought it from (scan.co.uk) and they said they ran the PSU under Prime 95 with no noise or problems. I know for a fact that the noise is coming from either the low motherboard area or the PSU and it is driving me insane as it is definitely more noticeable when running games or multiple programs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Luke

No, there are no wires hanging anywhere near the PSU.

There is a small wire running flush to the fan grill inside the PSU itself but it doesn't appear to be touching the fan as it spins and this is how it came.

To me, this sound like something it touching the fan as it spins. An internal loose wire, that is moving in the airstream of the spinning fan?

An internal sticker that has come loose, and is flapping in the airstream?

Nope definitely not, however since I posted I have noticed it is making the noise without the fan moving. This has been a problem for a while a I just noticed the two were occurring at the same time, which may or may not be a coincidence and I jumped on it and posted here.

The noise itself is a high pitched whine/beeping almost, and I'm having real difficulty finding the cause of it. It seems to occur when I move or scroll the mouse at times, which lead me to believe it could be CPU related, but then why would the noise be coming from lower down the machine? It just doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe dodgy capacitors?

I realize that I'm throwing questions at you and not giving you much to go on, sorry. :(

Edit: I can confirm that the PSU is making the beeping noise when the fan spins, the noise I'm hearing from the mobo is a separate issue I think.

Also, the noise occurs even when the fan twitches, there is no airflow for anything to get caught in to my knowledge.
