Hello all! I am glad I found this site as it seems there are some very knowledgeable people on here. I am incompetent when it comes to PC talk, but if one of you could help me I'd be very grateful...

We have an old Sony Vaio CR120E laptop, from circa 2006/7 or so. It is running on Vista 32 bit and has a resolution of 1280x800. I am intending to set this up as a "desktop", so to speak, for my mother. We intend to to throw this behind the desk and shut the screen, using a wireless keyboard and mouse, while hopefully using an external display that is bigger and better resolution. She only uses it to surf the internet, not gaming or anything. It has only a 15 pin VGA output. My question: if I got say a 19" full HD monitor, could a VGA out be used to get anywhere near to a good HD picture and not have it blurry text or bars on any part of the screen? Can it be stretched or extended or anything like that? I have an idea that the answer is probably no. Any recommendation for a screen resolution that would display well with a size around 17 or 19 that I could look for? I'm not looking for super performance. This machine is still very fast using an internet connection right now, she just needs a bigger display. Sorry for the long post for my first time and look forward to any help you can give me. Thank you!

Josh

Shouldn't be a problem. Just set the resolution for the monitor to the right resolution and make sure the image only gets displayed on the external screen.

Full hd resolution isn't a problem on VGA. I'm typing this very message on a full hd monitor, connected through VGA. Experiencing no problems whatsoever.

I don't notice a difference when using VGA or HDMI/DVI/DP, though my eyesight isn't the best. VGA requires a bit more configuring IIRC (or well did back when CRTS were mainstream)

The monitor is up to personal preference. for 19" and below I usually like 4:3 @ 1280 x 1024, though that might be just me.
