GTX 680 OpenGL crashes? Anyone else?

I understand my card may be faulty but I believe drivers are an issue. It's been happening since 3.10 i believe? About Christmas, maybe earlier. When I play less demanding games, NEVER a crash, maybe one in a few hundred hours.

I played Far Cry 3, crash every 8 hours.

Bioshock Infinite, crashed twice in an hour.

The error message somtimes fails to exist but when it does it is Kernal something, sorry, a kernal error is rare. Another is "OpenGL has crashed but has recovered" and "314.22 Nvidia has recovered". Sorry they aren't exact.

So what do you guys think, driver, hardware, or what?

I am NOT overclocking, but I put my power target on 132%, still happens at 100%.

I AM overclocking my CPU to 4.1GHz, i5 2550k, stable. The crashing was happening before I just recently (three days ago) OC'ed.

Any tips? Driver sweeper maybe? Never used the program before..

EDIT: I used driver sweeper, now I just have 314.22 and OpenGL crashed today. Then Desktop Window Manager has stopped working, that is a first I believe. This was on Dead Island Riptide, and that is bugged to hell.. maybe that's why for this specific error?

It sounds like hardware. Log your GPU stats on a program like GPU-z and see what temps you are getting while playing after it is warmed up. I suspect that you are having either a power supply or heat issue since you are raising the power to 130%. I assume you are using something like MSI Afterburner or the terrible Asus OC program? Either your PSU isn't able to put out enough wattage or the case is heating up and your system is shutting off the GPU for safety reasons. By raising the power limit, you are draining more power from the PSU than a stock GPU normally would.

a couple questions:

What brand (vendor) is the GTX 680?
What overclocking utility are you using?
What is your power supply's watts rating? Is it 80 plus?
How many other devices are connected to your power supply? <- Hard drives, USB devices, number of fans, etc.

Well, I have a 800w Cooler Master psu. Shouldn't that be beefy enough for even a 690 OCed?

I will start logging. I am using EVGA Precision.

EVGA 680 2GB w/ backplate.
EVGA Precision.
800w, modular and 80 plus. Gold.
1 HDD, 1 SSD, 3 or 4 fans.

How would I log with GPU-Z?

Yes, 800w should be plenty for youe system. You should just double check that the PCI power cables are both seated properly on the PSU. Modular PSU cables sometimes have a tendency to slip out.

Click the "sensors" tab, then on the bottom click the box next to "log to file". If the box was already checked, uncheck it then check it again and it will bring up a window asking you where you want to save the log file. It will save it in a .txt file that is best viewed in a web browser; Word or Notepad will work but the columns usually don't line up well. When you open the .txt file you will notice it creates a new entry every second. Just get the GPU warmed up by playing a game, hit alt-tab and start the log, then click the game again and keep playing for another few more minutes or until it throws an error. From there you can look up your GPU's maximum temp and compare it to the temps in the log when the GPU is under the most load. Also pay attention to fan speed RPM, it could be something as simple as a faulty fan or fan controller. If you need any help, you can always post the log on here. Appears to be a temp issue. What is the fan RPMs of the GPU when the TDP is hitting 98%? You say your CPU is overclocked? Does your case have an exhaust fan? It says on the bottom of the comment that you have the H100 CPU cooler? How close is the GPU to the radiator? You might want to install CoreTemp or CPU-Z and check the logs of the CPU temp as well, although that cooler should be able to easily cool an OC'd 2550k. And, what method are you using to OC the CPU? Did you change the core multiplier or did you change the voltages and base clock?

When you said you put your power target to 132%, what program are you doing that on? Did you make sure you clicked 'apply' after you changed it back to 100%?

Also, I was wondering, do you have VituMVP or anything like it installed and running?

Did you change the core multiplier or did you change the voltages and base clock? Answer: I sadly don't know :O I changed a number that was 34 (3.4GHz) to 41 (4.1GHz). I already have Core Temp, I know the temps are fine. The H100 is about 9 inches from the GPU. Too far right?

Get this, hold on to your chair. The side of the computer is freaking open, it's just off. Side is off. Off. Is that enough ventilation for my comp.? Lol.

Ha ha. Only 9 inches away? It should be a min. of 4 feet, get some extension tubing from the automotive store. Also, you should take the motherboard out of the case and put it in the fridge. JK. I kid, I kid. The CPU cooler is just fine in your case.

I was just making sure that no hot air from another source was blowing onto the GPU. I had a similar issue with my GPU there are two case fans right next to it that blow into the case. Without a GPU installed, they act as an intake and possibly cool the case down. But, with a big GPU installed, they were just blowing hot air back into my GPU and causing crashes. I flipped all the case fans outward except for one on the front and never had a crash again. One other source of hot air could be the power supply. If you have a bottom mounted PSU with a fan on top and the fan is pointing into your case, then it is most likely blowing very hot air into the GPU. I have mine turned down, but I also have a vent on the bottom of my case.

I'm guessing it is an EVGA card and ,like most I've seen, it uses the NVIDIA reference HS/F setup with one fan pulling air out through the back of the case? Your fan should only be a minimum of around 600 RPM at any given time. The EVGA Precision program has a fan speed profile. Make sure everything is reset to default or even better just re-install it or remove it (since you are not OC'ing it anyway). You might also want to check that the fan wire is seated properly in the connector on the card. If all is fine, then the fan or fan controller may be bad and you might need to return it for a replacement. Just make certain that you ruled everything else out first. You should even try the card in a different PC if you have access to one to see if it crashes and the fan spins down the same way before doing an RMA.

BTW, the value you changed on your CPU is the core multiplier. That is the safest way to OC a Sandy/Ivy Bridge CPU. Sometimes changing the core voltages and base clock can have adverse effects on other parts of the system.

Edit: actually, I'm looking at my fan RPMs right now and they are idling at 1,000 RPM. I have a different HS/F, Asus uses a double fan setup but the fans are roughly the same size. Usually, 120mm low power fans have a minimum speed of 600 RPM and 90mm fans are slightly higher around 800-1,000 RPM. The bigger the fan, the slower it needs to spin to produce the same amount of wind force. Either way, 50 to 100 RPM is not normal.

My GPU went to 100% load, then crashed. Temp was 92c, is that fine or too hot? The thing is, most of my fans are blowing outwards, and the card is FINE on less demanding games, I'm going to try Crysis 2. This kind of crap never happened before. The top (fan) of the psu isn't too hot, and it is blowing into the GPU. Is this a no-no?

Is 92c Immediate crash, bad, ok, good, or what?

Edit: Awesome!! I put the setting on Bioshock to ~ High. Was on ultra. Now everything is fine, it was the TDP, when it maxed out the card just took a s**t. Well, now im averaging 75% TDP on 60fps, and I played for a full hour. (Also, Bioshock is awesome. If you don't have it, your missing out.)

If your case has a vent on the bottom where the PSU sits and there is enough clearance under the case to vent the hot air out, then flipping the PSU is a good idea.

I do have Bioshock Infinite and I actually beat it a few weeks ago. Surprise ending as you may have heard, I hope nobody spoiled it for you. Before I got my 2nd GTX 660 (non-ti) I was playing Infinite on ultra everything in 1080p with no issues. My GPU was hitting 98% most of the time, but it never crashed and I had smooth frame rates. The GTX 680 should be able to do Ultra everything without breaking a sweat.

BTW, if you have GTA IV, you should check out the GTA IV Maximum Graphics mod. They replace all the generic cars with real Ferraris, Lambos, Porches, Benzes, BMWs, even the GT-Rs are in it as well as the Silvias. Everything looks better too.

I too had this same error with my rig. I re-installed clean drivers and even RMA'd my GPU with EVGA. But this did not solve it...

Using EVGA Precision X, I noticed a spike in GPU activity before the crash, when the temp of the card reached 77 degrees, . So I made a custom fan profile using Precision X, so that when temperatures reached 75 degrees, the fan speed increased dramatically to keep temps below 75.

This has FIXED the problem and I haven't had a driver crash since. I dont know why the card spazzed out when it reached 77 degrees... seems a pretty average temp to me. But i guess the card will also last longer keeping it well below 80!

Yes, i believe temps should go above 70-75 degrees. YOu should setup a custom fan profile, to increase fan speeds for your GPU when temps are above 70 degrees. will run more loudly, but you can max the settings out then, plsu the card might last longer. My card crashed everytime it went above 77 degrees. Now it never crashes!
