What does HDD S.M.A.R.T. capability for?

I always seen this many time when booting the system. What does HDD S.M.A.R.T. capability for? What does it do? I noticed mine is Disabled. Was that okay? Your responses will help a lot. Thanks!

hdd smart is Self monitoring and reporting technology. it will basically tell you if there are any problems going on with your hdd and notify you rather than it just crapping out

Switch it on in the bios for it to monitor hdd for possible failure.
