Hi all,

Briefly: It looks like I POST ok but the CPU Fan isn't spinning and isn't detected.

The Details: I just did an pseudo-out-of-case build with the following:

Intel Core i5-3570K
CORSAIR Builder Series CX600 600W ATX12V v2.3
CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB)
Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

I assembled the CPU/CPUFan, RAM and Mobo out of the case, but put the hard drive and PSU in the case. I plugged in the case's LED, Reset, and Power switches and the little speaker. I plugged in the 24-pin ATX power cable, and the 8-pin CPU power cable. I even plugged in the SATA cable for the hard drive. I then plugged the power cable from the PSU to the wall. I switched on the PSU and the CPU standby LED on the mobo lit up (green). I then pushed the power button on the case to boot up the mobo. I heard a single beep, followed by the beep sequence for lack of VGA cable (oops) so I plugged in my VGA cable to see the splash screen. At the bottom of the screen is said two things:

1. No keyboard detected (makes sense cause I didn't hook one up)
2. No CPU Fan! (uh... what?)

I checked the CPU Fan to see if it was spinning, and it was not.

I powered off the system through the power button on the case, switched off the PSU, and unplugged the power cable to the PSU. I then started checking my connections.

1. The CPU fan is plugged into the CPU_FAN plug on the mobo.
2. The 24/8-pin ATX/CPU power cables are fully and firmly in place. They are not loose.

The way I see it, I've either connected something incorrectly, one of my parts (fan, mobo, or PSU) are faulty, or there's some weirdo-BIOS thing I have to do. I called the ASUS customer support, and the dude seemed pretty clueless as to how this is possible... though he did suggest I plug the CPU fan to the PSU directly (if possible) to eliminate the possibility of a faulty fan or PSU. I haven't done this yet, but seems like a reasonable idea...

Anyone ever seen something like this before? Any thoughts or solutions?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, it's either going to be the fan itself, or the CPU_FAN header on the MOBO, it will not boot up if it does not detect a fan there. I would not start up very far, but you could try plugging a case fan or if you have a spare fan into the header to see if that fan runs, if it does, your header is fine and the CPU fan is bad, if the other fan doesn't work, I would say it is likely the MOBO header.

If I plug in a case fan into the CPU fan header and it detects a CPU fan (i.e. no error), will the next step (i.e. BIOS setup stage) fry my now-unprotected CPU? Is there a way to ensure the CPU will not operate even if it thinks there's a functional fan?

Not that I know of, but the presence of your heatsink should be enough to keep it cool so you can shut it down, not much is going to be happening to the CPU if you are just hitting BIOS. Just boot it up, see if the fan works, it will be pretty much immediately obvious, and then shut down.
