Frequent internet interruptions

Hey there!

First of all, sorry about the title, the issue is rather complex and I wasnt sure how to state it.

Since tuesday now we (in our house) have had rather weird problem with the internet. Everyone (without exception) experience the same problem, so I don't think it has anything to do with settings on individual pcs. Also, afaik, no setting-changes to any pc/router/modem have been made during the last 4 weeks.

The problem: All applications requiring internet (Firefox, League of Legends, Steam, Chrome, IE) get interruptions for approximatly 10 seconds, every 50 seconds, making it really shitty to browse and impossible to play anything.
On the other hand, Skype and/or torrent downloads work perfectly, without any interruptions.
At the same time there is no physical interruption of internet (according to my pc during an interruption phase everything is running smoothly and according to plan). For example if i type google.com during a "down-phase" it won't load. However having google.com pinged in cmd at the same time will show no interruption and appears to work just fine.

There is no difference between using w-Lan or cable (i personally use cable, but if i switch to w-lan i have the same problem).

Nobody on the entire internet seems to ever had this problem and according to my provider our internet is working perfectly and there doesnt seem to be anything wrong with it / the modem.

I tried turning it on/off again, i even reset the router to factory settings (though really they were never changed to anything but factory settings). Nothing seems to work and I just cant wrap my head around the problem. I hope anybody has any ideas or .. I dont know anything really. I dont consider myself an idiot when it comes to computers but right now I feel like a monkey.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Regards,

If the same thing is happening when connected directly to the modem (not using the router) then the problem lies with either your ISP or the modem it's self. An ISP is ALWAYS going to tell you, Yea our product is the best there's nothing wrong. Not always the case :p. May need to search for an alternate provider. I'd test it connected only to the modem first. If it still happens. have them replace the modem. If that doesn't help then switch companies.

Thats actually a great idea, I'll try connecting a laptop directly to the modem and I'll see if it works. Assuming it works.. would the problem then lie with the router? If yes how come its only affecting browsing/gaming but not skype?

If it still doesnt work then, ill try replacing the modem next I guess. At any rate, thank you so far, I'll get to trying

Some applications are more robust then others and when there is a delay or skips in service they seem to not be troubled. Where as some applications even the smallest skip in signal can cause them to crash. It truly just varies on a app to app basis.

Assuming that everything works perfectly connected directly to the modem then yes I would assume that there is an issue with the router. I only say that (with out further troubleshooting) because the issue seems to happen with wired and wireless connections and across every machine u have connected. If the issue was pinpointed to 1 or 2 machines only the case may be different. let us know what you find and we can start more troubleshooting there.

So I know finally tried to plug in my laptop directly into the modem and I still have the same problem. Guess its the modem, although the company assured me that they tested it and that it works fine... Great... ^^

I still cant get over the fact that it appears to be a DNS error somehow as torrents and skype are not affected. Also why does it work for 50 seconds befor not working for 10? Where is the sense in that? Is it lagging? How come the company traced my modem from their desks and didnt find any errors? I dont want to invest in a new modem and have the same issue again :(

lol I feel your frustration. Typically a companies "test" of your modem involves seeing if it's "recognized" or not. Keep in mind the first line of defense you talk to and often the 2nd and 3rd certainly are not technicians by any means. Just your average people that sat in a training class for two weeks and got stuck on the phones with step by step instructions on what to do for scenario A B C etc.

Your ISP should provide you with the modem. That is something that you shouldn't have to pay for, if they don't replace it for you FREE OF CHARGE. I'd highly recommend looking into another provider.

Now for the tricky stuff :p. So... It's most likely an issue with your modem, the wiring, or even the cable/wiring/service in your area. (you may not be the only person with this issue in your neighborhood) To better explain what I'm talking about take a look at this link. It will save me time typing and it's a good explanation.

THanks for the link, that certianly clarified a few things. Now just to make sure Ive gone and retested with a different laptop and at this point I am sure its either the modem or something beyond. The really surprising thing is still that skype and torrent work perfectly. And my browser works too, but stops working every 50 seconds for around 10 seconds. I thought this might be a DNS problem, but forcing my modem to use different DNS servers didnt change the problem at all. At this point it really just has to be the modem and I have no idea what kind of error could produce such a weird error, but I guess I'll have to try and get a new modem.

Thank you for being "by my side" to this point unoriginal, I'll report back once/if this problem is/gets solved!

Hey unoriginal!

After working on this for nearly 3 days straight I think I finally found the solution. My solution is not ideal, but apparently its working.

What I did is disable my modems Firewall. First both of them (ipv6 firewall and "SPI Firewall Protection")
This solved the problem and after playing around I've realized its the SPI Firewall protection setting thats fucking the internet.

I have disabled it for now however Im wondering: Is this safe? And is this acceptable? Or should I contact my ISP about this issue?

Greetings and thanks again :)

hmmm that is interesting. The SPI firewall is whats called a Stateful Firewall. Basically what it does is monitors packets for connections and deciphers if they are legitimate or not and either allows or blocks them.

Neither of those "should" be causing that issue so that's an interesting issue. I'd still contact your ISP and explain your findings as I think it could still be a junked modem. Could be that it's just getting slow and causing the latency? I'm not sure :/... But something is definitely not right. How old is your modem?

To answer your question, It's fine to disable it.. You won't run into issues. All of your computers should have the windows default firewall and I'd make sure you have either Avast, Avg or another free antivirus paired with Malware bytes just to keep your machines as clean as possible. Of course as with any computer... The best protection is a smart user so as long as you stay away from sites people shouldn't go to in the first place you won't have issues.
