Hey all,

Long time reader here at tom's hardware, but first time poster.

I'm building a new system for gaming at 1440p and am not sure what graphics solution to choose. My budget for the graphics card(s) is around $800 and I've been considering options ranging from xfire 7870's to SLI 670's. Am I going to need more than 2gb of vram? If so, extra vram comes a little cheaper on the AMD side. On the other hand, it seems like SLI doesn't suffer as much stuttering as xfire does currently.

A follow up to the graphics question is what sort of cpu power I'll need paired with the graphics card(s), especially if it's a dual card setup. The 3570k is a likely candidate, but how far should I be trying to push the overclock and what sort of cooling should I look at (small air, big air, closed liquid).

Thanks for any advice people can provide. Any words of wisdom or tales of personal experience are much appreciated.

Sorry I was not clear. The $800 was specifically for the graphics. I agree with you and the total budget is more in the 1600 range.

While normally I would agree, options get to be pretty sparse past $600 and I think there's a real chance for a sli/crossfire solution to be better value for money in that range. At the very least it opens up more options and levels of performance.

Thanks for the complete suggestions. Based on the benchmarks I've seen I think I'd want a little more than a single 7970, so maybe 670's in SLI is the right answer. Based on past experience, I'm not a big fan of purchasing one card now and another one later. Typically by the time I find myself wanting to add a second card I find that model is either not available or prices have gone up.
