Hey all,

I am trying to setup a dual monitor display but it doesn't seem to want to work. I am using a VGA to DVI cable (connected via a VGA to DVI adapter) along with a VGA to HDMI cable. Before I go into further detail, I am just going to clarify that both monitors work fine on their own. Anyway, upon trying to use the monitor connected to HDMI I either get "no signal" or "no VGA cable connected" depending on what monitor I use.

However, when i go into the NVIDIA control panel, or go to adjust the screen resolution, they are both detected. I can also move the cursor, windows or icons onto the other screen, but I just can't see them.

I am using an NVIDIA GeForce 310 which claims to be able to support multiple monitors, so there shouldn't be any problems there.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be, and if so, how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

I am confused on your setup - the card has HDMI, DVI & VGA outputs, which allow for two of the three ports to be used at a time.

Which connector on the GPU are you using to connect to what type of connector on a monitor (i.e. HDMI out on GPU > HDMI in on monitor)?

Sorry for the confusion! The graphics card I have has two output slots; one HDMI and one DVI. I usually use the DVI out put to connect to the monitor but via a DVI to VGA adapter. The problem is that when I try to setup dual monitors and use the HDMI output on the graphics card, the monitors do not seem to work (just display no signal etc.)

Can you use a regular HDMI cable (HDMI > HDMI) to connect the monitor?

No I cannot, this is the only option I have as all the monitors I have just have a VGA output and the only other free slot on the graphics card is HDMI. So monitor VGA to graphics card HDMI is the only option.

The HDMI > VGA converter cables (like this one:  roductDisplayItem?IsBundle=false&GroupID=460&Code=0C19903&sb=:000001CC:00003C02:&hide_menu_area=yes&cid=us%3acse%3aoN1bIt%3aca" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/Len...|GoogleBase|0C19903&CAWELAID=1580783600&catargetid=1608281401&cagpspn=pla) don't always work properly - usually monitor has to be full HD to work - if your monitor won't support HD signal you may be out of luck. The HDMI output signal may be overloading the max resolution of the monitor, and that is why it is recognized, but not working properly.

In reading several articles about this - try setting the resolution of the monitor that is on the HDMI > VGA cable to 800 X 600 for testing purposes, and see if it works. If it does - you can try increasing it one step at a time. If the monitor won't support 1920 X 1080, then you have to make sure to step it down to the maximum resolution of the monitor.

Ok thanks, I will try that. Just one quick question, how can I do this if I am getting no visual on the monitor and cannot see what I am doing?

Unfortunately, this did not seem to work. The monitor just stayed on standby as it always does, any other suggestions?

I'm guessing you can only run one VGA monitor from an Nvidia card and the others have to be digital ones, I have been experimenting with a GTX560Ti and two monitors myself and can only get one of the two DVI connectors to output a signal if a DVI > VGA adapter is used but if the VGA port is used then that DVI port will no longer work with a DVI > VGA adapter.
