Files disappear when moving WD My Book from router to PC

A few months ago I moved my 2TB WD My Book from my desktop to a new WNDR4500 Netgear router as an attached storage device. The router recognized the drive just fine, and I've been able to access all of my files without issue. I use the drive as my primary NAS.

About a month ago I connected the My Book to my notebook, thinking I would back the contents up on a WD Passport. While attempting to view the contents of the My Book, only the two main folders were visible ("my photos" & "my music").

I tried taking ownership of the folders, and adjusting access rights, but nothing seemed to work. I was still only able to view the two "empty" folders.

I ended up reconnecting the drive to the router and copying the contents using the desktop (over Ethernet) to a local drive for archival. Everything seems to work fine as long as I leave it connected to the router.

Is the router doing something to the drive that makes the contents inaccessible to other devices when they are connected via USB? I must be missing something.

Thanks for any help!

I think you might need to enable the viewing of "hidden files". In windows 7 just open up Windows Explorer then at the top right click "Organize" then "Folder and Search Options" When the box comes up select the "View" tab and you will see the option below to Show Hidden Files. Hope that helps...

Did you make sure to check the "Replace owner on subcontainers and Objects" check box and did you receive errors when attempting to take ownership of the folders?

After taking ownership, you will need to close the folder's properties then reopen them, click on the security tab and click Advanced. Click "Change permissions..." If the local security group "Everyone" is not present, add it and give it full control permissions. Check the "Replace all child object permissions...." checkbox and click ok.

Check your effective permissions under advanced settings to verify the level of rights NTFS is granting you.

If the combination of taking ownership then adding the everyone to full control does not give you access, then you probably have an NTFS permission for explicit deny that is being flagged against your account. This might force you to completely wipe out and replace the permissions on the entire folder structure.
