So I recently upgraded my internet speed from 15/5 Mbps to 50/25 Mbps (I have Verizon FIOS is that helps in solving my problem) and I saw a minor improvement in my internet speed at my desktop which is in my office while the router is in the family den. I recently tried to test my internet speed near my router with my laptop and my desktop which get 2 out of 5 bars to compare and two and the results show that the problem is the range of the WiFi. The laptop was able to get 53.8/22.9 and the desktop got 5.4/15.9. So I decided that I need a range extender and I need to upgrade my wireless adapter from a Linksys A1000 to something better and this is where my problem comes in. I don't understand network equipment very much and i was hoping i could get some recommendation from you guys on what i should buy. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I have FiOS 50/25 as well. Glorious.

But it does not help with speed inside your house. 50/25 is what Verizon delivers to the router. After that, many things can come into play, especially via WiFi.

Distance, house construction, electrical equipment, neighbors on the same channel...all can interfere with a WiFi signal.
What is in between the router and the PC?

You need to get a better wireless router, the one you have from Verizon is know to have bad range and slow speed. It really depends how much money you want to spend. I run a Linksys EA-4500 and get good performance and range and it cost me around $150 6 months ago. There are faster wireless routers out there but you would need to upgrade your wireless adapters to take full advantage of them.
