I have a monitor with no HDMI. The monitor is connected to my PowerColor 7850 card by a DL-DVI cable. Can I also, at the same time, connect a HDMI cable from the 7850 video card to the HDMI input of my sound bar? I would have audio on HDMI and video on DVI from the same card. Is anyone doing this already, or would it just confuse (damage?) the video card?

Yes, you can do as you propose without harming anything. Just go into Control Panel/Sound/Playback and select your AMD HDMI as the default playback device.
