Looking for Computer Speakers

I'm looking for a pair of 2.1 computer speakers for my new rig because I'm sick of using my earphones (Klipsch Image x10i) and being confined to my chair.

My dad has a set of Harman/Kardon Sound Sticks II, which are great, but I'd like something with a bit more power.

My budget ideally, is £200, but I'm willing to spend up to £300.

Thanks in advance, Sam.

sorry to say but the klipsch pro media 2.1 is rather lackluster.

when looking for some speakers a few years i bought and tried them out.

sound quality out of the satelites is not bad however they are not powerful enough to be paired with the sub that klipsch provides in the set. the result is that bass completely overpowers mids and highs.

even my very old logitech 5.1 set was more balanced.

now, with that said i currently use klipsch speakers but the home theatre variety which can keep up to my subwoofer.

------

@op its hard to go wrong with logitech speakers as they typically have good value for the money.

if you are serious about good sound though perhaps investing in a pair of home theater bookshelf speakers and an amplifier would be ideal.

Logitech is terrible. You must have have the bass knob turned to the max instead on the 10oclock default position which is why the bass sounded crappy. The Klipsch Promedia 2.1 are better sound quality than anything Logitech has ever made with the only pair of speakers beating out the Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 being the Corsair SP2500 and that's only the sub woofer at the extreme low ends because the Klipsch speakers have a somewhat small and lacking 6.5" sub but not in quality just in the extreme deep low level rumbles.. The Klipsch have higher overall fidelity and quality than even the SP 2500s.

i am no audiophile by far but i can appreciate good sound. i've been able to test out various setups over the years and have had the opportunity to play with a few more sets that i dont personally own.

logitech while perhaps not what i would call great is definitely more than adequate for most users. they represent good value for the dollar. if you are an audiophile you shouldnt be wasting time with such speakers though and likely have a much much larger budget. for everyone else though they are typically good enough.

of course there are various other companies that market speakers which are on par with logitech however they may not be as well known.

i've owned the klipsch promedia 2.1 in the past and they were so horrible i returned them. as i said the bass is so overpowering even when turned down to 15-20% that it completely mufflels the satelites. sound quality was fair out of the satelites but thats about it. to be perfectly honest my 10 year old logitech 5.1 set sounded better which i paid half as much for. the only thing which impressed me was the build quality. they were definitely sturdy and well built but the interface was obviously more similar to home theater type speakers than pc speakers.

i ended up buying the klipsch quintet iv 5.0 set and the 450w subwoofer powered by a pioneer vsx-30 receiver. quite a bit chunk of change to spend however in the end there was just no way that pc speakers were going to work for what i wanted as an upgrade. the quality klipsch pumps into their ht line of speakers was even better than the promedia set. sound was also much better.

of course we all have our own opinion. just as you think logitech is terrible. in the end the op would be highly suggested to actually listen to systems in person if at all possible.

Your settings were wack and you needed a sound card for the Klipsch Pro Media 2.1. Don't be fooled this was user error because you failed to tune the settings and meet the prerequisites required to be hosted from a dedicated desecrate sound card with premium DAC and AMP.

i know perfectly well how to set up and power speakers. there is no need to degrade me.

what you dont seem to realize is that some people do have issues with the speaker set. here is an example taken off another forum:

"I have Klipsch Pro-Media 2.1s and am having trouble with them. The bass is completely overpowering. Unless the subwoofer is completely off the bass overwhelms whatever I am listening to, be it movies, music, games whatever. I had similar problems with my logitech speakers as well. Using headphones sounds fine. Just whenever I use speakers. I'm using my onboard SB Live 24 bit, I've also tried an Audigy card."

it is our opinion that the subwoofer is too powerful for the satelite speakers. if you like it then that is your opinion. i only want to let the op know what i thought of the product just as you stated you think logitech sucks. this is always why i suggest the op listen to the speakers in person to judge for themselves.

Could be another ^ "personal opinion" based on user error.

Here's an accurate statement and review that aligns with my findings of ownership of over 2 years.

"If you pride yourself on crisp, clear, powerful sound, the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 is a leader in its price range. But if you want deep, precise bass from your sub, this set up may leave you hanging." IGN

"We can safely say the speakers themselves sound fantastic, but they're let down by an underwhelming subwoofer." IGN

"Excellent audio quality. Very powerful. Superb-sounding subwoofer. Sub level control on satellite speakers."

"Even after 10 years, the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 remains a rock-solid PC speaker system capable of great things, including a nice flat frequency response and powerful bass."

if you want to get childish and play one-upper i'm out of this conversation.

i openly admitted the facts that we all have our different opinions and that the op should take them with a grain of salt. i also stated that the op should try the sets out in person to find out what their preferences are.

@op

good luck

Speakers should be self amplified therefore the AMP of the sound card is irrelevant as it should only be passing a line-level signal to the speakers, not an amplified one.

It still helps allot to have a pre amped and pre "CLEANED" signal as the source before it hit's the speakers built in amp IMO.
