This is pissing me off cause I've been wasting hours and hours trying to make these piece of crap tools work withb even bigger crap tutorials that tell you what option to choose when even my granny can learn to erase HDD ONCE it starts but the tutorials on the internet missed this tiny detail - making it RUN in the 1st place...

On the verge of selling it and the HDD I wanna do proper erasing but no tool so far worked

I have Aw laptop with Ricoh Media card reader , disabling drivers from Device manager does nothing, DBAN gives me PCI sysf error both from DVD or USB boot/ BIOS is major joke, nowhere can you disable Media card reader there. It has Boot option, Security where only password (supervisor) is set, and few other tabs.

I have tried Eraser but I do not know if it does the same job, it does run but from windows... not sure if it eraser all when Windows is used...

then I tried HDDeraser that is supposedly the best as it erases things DBAN cannot... well

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOBgciZvxiw

The guy enters R drive, great! I can't cause Autoexec stops while loading from the DVDRW I use and then it enters A: drive with no sign of able to start HDDerase, just folders Level01-03, CAB files, Lib folder and Autoexec.bat that's on A: drive, no sign of the program...

How to fix this no start of R: drive or any drive to run HDDerase, can't even complete this part cause it doesnt load it properly..

Or any tool that can do like HDDerase and how to?

Solution
you mentioned in your thread that you wish to destroy data before you "dispose" of the HDD, so what is the issue , take the drive apart , take out the disc , smash it 20 times with a builders Bolster, run a magnet over it, then burn it in a hot fire, , ok sorry for the sarcasm , HDD's are cheap and all of the above will destroy the data and if your still paranoid about that not working the take the disc into a secret location in the middle of the night and bury it as deep as you can, (are you james bond or have you been peeking at things you should not have "tut tut tut").... PS D-Ban does work and this may be a stupid question Did you burn the disc as an ISO using an ISO burner ????. that does really count you know. a note for all , I...
Try formatting the HD from a Windows 98 bootdisk... once that's done, wiping the HD won't be a problem.
http://www.bootdisk.com/

Windows 98 - Formatting with boot disk
http://en.kioskea.net/faq/4749-windows-98-formatting-with-boot-disk

Or try formatting from the Windows 7 DVD Recovery Options
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-are-the-system-recovery-options-in-Windows-7

If nothing has helped, download the Hiren's Boot CD (for CD or USB).. it includes several formatting and wiping tools, so one has to work.

Im trying to erase the HDD (entirely including OS and all) with HDDerase, for TL:DRers... or eventually DBAN but it has to be outside windows, not run Eraser or others from Windows.

How does formating my HDD help? I could put win 7 disk and delete the partitions, I am talking about erasing, not formatting.

For TL;DRers... I have confidential information that I was able to see including the filenames of it with recovery software. Before disposing of this old laptop I want to make a FULL ERASE of the HDD, at least 6-7 passes (DoD) if not 35 passes (Gutmann).

DBAN - failed, PCI sysf error. cannot disable the Media card reader in BIOS, cannot start the program at all..
HDDerase - considered the best as it can erase even sectors that DBAN cannot - tried to run it from DVD, again does not start properly, I enter A: in MS DOS rather than CD drive.. never been able to run it
MHDD - I do not even know how this program does it, nowhere explained

Eraser - runs some erasing processes of Free space but does not wipe out outside windows, I do not like the idea of running it from windows, I want to run outside windows

Any other tools like HDDerase or DBAN that can do at least several passes? The failure of several tools and wasted hours got to my nerves.

Is this as good as any of the listed tools? Also can I boot it from USB instead of DVD?

It is as good as all the other tools. Beside that there is no need for several passes! A long time ago, when disks had very low capacity, it was possible to restore fragments of the data after the first pass in a data recovery lab and you definitely have to disassemble the disk to do that. I don't think anybody will do that with your laptop.

It's more than obvious that something in the Hard Drive (Security Settings or malware) is preventing you from erasing the hard drive so formatting deletes whatever is causing the problem, and it's much easier to then wipe/erase a formatted drive.. Deleting the system partition is also an option, after all erasing/wiping is supposed to wipeoff any leftover information and doesn't matter how you do it, or what steps you follow as long as you get it done, and I'm just suggesting what seems to me the easiest way to get it done. Also disable the antivirus previously, and reset the Security permissions with Secedit before repeating if it becomes necessary.

If you read what I was saying (some of you), you would see my problem isn't that something is preventing me from erasing with DBAN, it is a common problem that any had and it is when you have Media Card Reader and because the program s clearly stupid - will not allow you to run it unless you disable the Media Card Reader. Well, my limited BIOS has no such option to disable the media card thus the PCI sysf error. Tried with older versions - the same result. SO I gave up with DBAN, it doesn't work. This link above is smth I could figure myself if t could actually be started.

Ok at least this tool worked - I used USB Installer, selected the 600MB iso and installed to make a bootable USB. According to its instructions, I selected Console/Terminal/Shell option from it, typed command to start shredding and then I get like:

shred: dev/sda: pass 12/101 (111111) 125GiB/150GiB 83%
shred: dev/sda: pass 12/101 (111111) 135GiB/150GiB 85%
shred: dev/sda: pass 12/101 (111111) 144GiB/150GiB 92%
shred: dev/sda: pass 12/101 (111111) 149GiB/150GiB 98%

etc, until it reaches pass 101/101, I calculated ETA: 50 Hours

So I want to know how reliable this process is, it was saying to type -n 100 within the command, so since I am doing it 100 times, is it as good as HDDerase, DBAN or MHDD, is it worth waiting for the 100 passes?

I want to know how much it erases? e.g HDDerase erases things that DBAN doesn't so is this as good as DBAN or better?

I've run DBAN on several laptops that had a card-reader, no problem at all. As to your question, DBAN is generally regarded as the best of it's kind for secure data erasure.

Also, 100 times is overkill in the extreme and a good way to accelerate drive wear and failure.

I want to ask you smth cause I used Knoppix as the above poster suggested, ran 25 passes and didn't feel like going for more (it had to run 101 times), so then force shut down after the 25th, is this enough? Did I do any good erasing like DBAN or? So far this is the only tool that worked for me.

Hello you can try http://killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm .I also used it for my hard disk for complete low level formatting. It was success....You can create bootable usb with just few clicks of mouse. Then just simply boot from usb and select method

In free version only one pass zero is there. You can consider buying it or getting it from other source :D (You know what i mean)

My question now is not which program to use but:

Just getting rid of pictures that I do not wanna be retrieved when selling a system to a store, also that means both the picture and the filename that also has information needs to be gone and unretrievable. Should I understand that Knoppix is enough to get rid of pictures and their filename too?

(but he could tell the disc had been used and wiped) . so there you have it D-BAN WORKS.
