No Beeps or Display, Bad Mobo?

I received my parts for my new build yesterday. I should have bread boarded it but my Dad did not want to. We put everything together, all the case fans, graphics card fans, and CPU fan turned on. The CD drive worked. I received no video output or post beep from the mini speaker that came with my parts that I plugged in to the speaker port. Thinking that it could possibly be a case shorting it problem, I took out the motherboard and attempted to boot with just motherboard and CPU. Still no post beeps, so I tried with one stick of ram, two sticks of ram, and no ram in the correct spots according to the manual. To add to the trouble, about 3/4 of the time that I start it up it shuts down after a few seconds. After trying a few times, I could finally get it to boot but still no beeps or video. I am thinking that it could potentially be a bad motherboard, but before I return it should I try anything else?

If it matters, here are my parts.

Could be a bad motherboard or a bad power supply - those are the two most likely culprits.

Any chance you can scrounge up another power supply from somewhere to try?

I have a very old one, and it may work. I was afraid to mix new and old parts.

Just use it to test the system and see if it'll POST - that should tell you if the problem was the power supply or not.

The power supply did not work with the Mobo, as I said it was very old. I have a voltmeter, is there anyway I can test the PSU that way?

My Mobo ATX is 24 pins, and my old PSU is 20 pin. Will check with multimeter now, and will post results

Seems to be Mobo problem, as the PSU seems to be working. I am guessing my best bet is to return it?

Ahh, it's that old, huh? :p
Well, it's good that your power supply is working, but sucky that your motherboard isn't. And yes, your best option right now is to RMA it.

Bought a PSU from a local store to test to see if that was the problem, and it boots but no POST still

That's interesting. So what exactly is displaying on the screen?

Alright so I fixed the problem, and felt like an idiot. My original PSU had one of those break away 2x4 cables, but my new one just had 2, 2x2 cables which one went into ATX 12 V. I did not have anything plugged into ATX 12v as I figured my power supply didn't support it, and for some reason in my mind I always thought I had it plugged in! So I hooked back up my original PSU and then got 1 long and two short beeps, aka cannot display video, and I reseated video card, got a BIOS, and closed it all up. It is working great now, thanks!

Hahah, yeah, brain farts like that happen all the time.

I once spend two days trying to figure out why my monitor / video wasn't working - turns out I had bumped it and changed the imput without realizing it, and didn't think to check it.
