Is there any difference in os shutdown or shutting down via holding the power button? Can someone explain to me is it safe to shut down via power button? Other than it possibly corrupting data or ruining hard drive is there any other risk to hardware? Thank you for your help. What are the technical adversities of shutdown via power button.

OS shutdown is the best way to power down. It gives the os a chance to close all running applications/programs/files/windows correctly. The power button is like pulling the plug everything just stops mid-stream the next reboot the os will try to close everything first (if it can) and then start up. OS command=good power button=risky

by shutting down properly your system is doing several things including finalizing data writes, saving settings, and configuring updates. holding down the power button for 5 seconds may not damage hardware but it's akin to yanking the keys out of the ignition of a moving car instead of taking the time to stop and park properly.

unless your system has froze (or you're running windows 3.1) there's no reason NOT to shut down properly.
