Hello there,

Thanks for reading my post, and I'd be really grateful for any replies and feedback :)

I have a Dell Vostro 220 series desktop and I would like to upgrade my Pentium Dual-Core E2200 2.20gHz processor to perhaps an i3 onwards, and I realise that this involves investing in a new motherboard as the sockets are different.

I have tried to research articles but either they try to sell me something or that I don't know enough about my computer to derive what direction I should take. I have 2GB (2x1) of RAM, however I would also like my new motherboard to accommodate a DDR2 NVIDIA SLI-Ready 2GB (PC2-6400) RAM slot.

I also understand that my hardware needs to be compatible aswell, and my graphics card is an Intel G45/G43 Express Chipset, I don't know what else I need to find to make it compatible but any ideas would be helpful :)

Thank you! :)

This is very doable. You'll need to replace your CPU, motherboard, and RAM as the newer motherboards only support DDR3. Your old graphics won't matter as you'll be using the new on-chip integrated graphics. Unless you are gaming which I'm assuming you are not?

What will the main uses of this PC be?

You might aswell build a new system. The motherboard layout is proprietary and new motherboard wont fit, no board that supports a core i3 will support ddr2, they are ddr3 only. The power supply isnt all that great i suggest getting a new one. You could use the hdd and optical drive, but the OS that shipped with the system is tied to the motherboard so you will also need an operating system. Parts list is Case, PSU(seasonic, corsair, XFX, or antec preferably), motherboard, cpu, ram, and operating system(unless you have bought a retail copy). Post you budget and we will see what we can find for you.

Thank you for your reply,

Ah okay, so whatever motherboard I purchase, it'll have integrated graphics on? But if so, what's the purpose then of graphics cards, to make the DPI and picture clearer?

And thanks for the other info about the RAM, makes the goal a lot clearer now :)

Will all motherboards work/fit with my system or is it only intel ones? :)

Thanks again!

The motherboard will not have integrated graphics. The graphics will be on the CPU itself. The motherboard will have ports to plug in your monitor though.

If you aren't gaming or using applications that can take advantage of extra graphics, the integrated ones will be fine. It won't change how your picture looks.

What do you use this PC for? What is your budget for this upgrade?

Thank you for your reply,

Thanks for the information, and I will be gaming, just not the extent like the system requirements for Crysis 3 etc :) Although I'm hoping to still play Diablo 3 and WoW on it though, coupled with a few older games :)

Any suggestions for cheap graphics cards (which are the minimum requirement) for such games which are most universally compatible? :)

You searched in the wrong places.
Those are possible upgrades to your Vostro, however there are 2 motherboards available for this model, at this time it is unclear which one support Quads.

I wouldn't recommend spending money on any of these chips. There simply isn't much longevity in them and they are only available through resale sites like eBay. If you are going to upgrade, go with a modern CPU and motherboard.
