I borrowed a computer from a friend (without a monitor), installed ubuntu server on it. The model is compaq presario sr5220an, but I believe it's been upgraded, so the model doesn't matter anymore. The motherboard is now MCP61PM-HM. It was working just fine a week ago. This morning I tried to turn it on, but it didn't work. The cpu and case fan (only one) spinned like crazy, but the fan in the power supply looked normal. The green led around the power button wasn't on, but the hdd amber led was on since the power button was pressed (no blinking at all). The open/close button on optical drive worked fine, and I've tried putting a bootable cd in there (it's set to boot from cd before hdd in bios), but the symptoms were the same. Also, there was not beeps at all.

I've tried the following
- reset the CMOS
- removed ram
- unplugged hdd and optical drive
- unplugged power and press the power button for 30 seconds

I tried removing the power cords for those spinning fans, and I heard the soft clicking sound from hdd.

I don't have a VGA monitor. Normally, this pc is connected to my router via ethernet, and I ssh it. The reason I believe it doesn't boot is because my router says it's not connected when I turn it on. This computer was sitting around in my friend's house for years, and my friend doesn't know a thing about it.

Thanks.

Hi
"I heard the soft clicking sound from hdd." = faulty drive
Disconnect HDD - and see how the PC is acting - try to connect Monitor to see
If you power On the PC with NO memory you must hear Beep error sound - that will mean that you mobo is working
I doubt in MOBO , HDD.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

When I removed RAM and turn the pc on, I didn't hear any beeping sound. I just did it again to confirm this. The soft clicking sound from the HDD I mentioned sounded normal to me, so I just tried unplugging HDD and putting the CD in to boot from it, but it didn't change anything, the fans were still spinning loudly and power led still off, hdd led still on. Thanks

Another weird thing is once I press the power button and the fans spin, no matter how long I hold the power button again to turn it off, it just won't work. I have to unplug the pc from the wall to shut it.
