I recently installed a WD 2tb hard drive ( WD20EARX) and Windows (XP x64) will not recognize it even with disk management. It shows up in the bios and can be formatted with various bootable programs. I decided to see what would happen if I installed windows onto the new drive and to my surprise it installed just fine and all my other drives show up in that installation. If anyone has an idea as to how I can get the new drive to show up in my main windows installation it would be greatly appreciated.

Ah, my bad! Well, you could try to make a few partitions. if the HDD has a bad sector it can sometimes prevent windows from reading it, and if you partition the bad sector off then the good partition will show up in explorer. Otherwise you could try to download the WD diagnostic and repair tools and update the HDD firmware.

All of this is probably not going to work though if the HDD has the new 4k format. If it does, then I'm sorry to tell you this but you will have to upgrade your OS. The 4k format is incompatible with Win XP. There is nothing you can do.

I don't think that is true. One can use the align program or jumper for use in XP but they are only needed in single partition setups. And since XP installed on to the drive with ease I took the long route and reinstalled my main Windows. The drive showed right up even on the non updated os. So it had to be a software issue somewhere.
