emachine computer makes clicking noise, then receives error message PXE-E53: No boot filename received

Bad hard drive?
Can you boot from a DVD? A linux LiveCD, perhaps. Not to install anything, just to see if the system works without the hard drive in the loop.

Yes. I ran my window xp and it is trying to install...my clock and calendar was correct. I ran into a brick wall health and did not use it for some months. I went to F12 and tried the CD then Hdd and kept getting the black screen with the PXE-E53. I, knowing nothing, would it do this if the HDD was bad? Thank you so much from an 70 yr old that,'s still ticking....

Oh no when I hit the option R to recovery and repair it tells me I have no hard disk drives installed. Where did they go?.....
