CPU Fan Stuck On HIGH

So, I wanted to determine what was making my computer loud. Like an idiot, I unplugged the heatsink and plugged it back in while the computer was on. Now my heatsink is stuck at a constant 2600 rpm and is very loud. Using AI suite and fan control, I can no longer adjust the speed. I tried to reset the default bios settings, but that didn't change anything... What happened to cause this, and is there any way to fix it???
My mobo is an asus m5a97 r2.0.

Checked it, it's plugged into all 4 pins... still loud.. I've tried to troubleshoot everything. Even when I go into fan expert and try to change the settings from manual, to silent, to turbo, the fan speed doesn't change.

So you think I pretty much wrecked the cpu fan control circuit by doing what I did?
Also, if I plug it into a chassis fan 4 pin connector, it would receive enough power and I would still be able to control it correct?

Thanks a lot!!!! I guess I'll go the RMA route.

Before you RMA it have you checked your BIOS settings? I know it seems as though there is no reason for them to have changed but i've found that fan headers can be odd. Check to see that your CPU fan speed is set in bios to adjust to the temperature of your cpu.

Right before I confirmed the RMA, my roommate came to look at it and suggested I try another heatsink, just in case. I grabbed my stock heatsink and we swapped it out. Everything went back to normal and I have full control over my stock heatsink. I guess when I unplugged and plugged in my aftermarket heatsink it somehow fried the cable controlling the fan speed... Anyways, that happened about 5 minutes ago and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posted here trying to help me out!!!

Just so I don't leave you hanging, I went into bios and tried everything to change the speed, nothing would work...
