Catalyst Kills Windows 8 Brightness Controls

Hey guys, I've been looking into this problem for awhile now but I can't seem to find an answer. I have a Clevo P150HM with an i7-2670QM, 16GB RAM and Radeon HD 6990M running on Windows 8 64-Bit. I noticed a couple of months ago that my brightness controls aren't working (either with the keyboard shortcuts or through the power settings). It would still display the brightness decreasing or increasing at the top of the screen but there weren't any actual differences in the brightness. I'm not sure how this started but it was definitely working late last year when I was using an older Catalyst driver (I don't adjust the brightness very often). When I noticed the problem, I was running Catalyst 13.1.

As you may know, Catalyst 13.4 just came out. So I uninstalled 13.1 (at which point brightness controls came back), used Driver Fusion to erase any remaining traces of AMD software (at which point the brightness controls stopped working again, and it wouldn't even show the indicator at the top of the screen anymore), restarted the computer and then installed 13.4. At this point, the brightness indicator came back when I pressed the shortcut keys but it still won't make any difference. On top of that, my 3rd party Modern apps (as well as Maps) stopped functioning (they would launch into the splash screen and then exit out).

So since I'm running Windows 8, I decided to do a PC Refresh which basically erased all of my programs and reinstalled the windows system files (keeping only my documents, pictures etc.). I thought this would be a viable alternative to having to do a complete reinstall since the computer is pretty much starting from scratch again. After that, I tried installing 13.4 again. The brightness controls are still not working but the Modern apps have started to work again.

Has anyone else run into this problem? I've read from some people that it has to do with an Intel driver on some HP computers but I don't think it applies to me since my computer is not from HP and it seems to clearly be a fault of the new Catalyst drivers.

Can anyone confirm that the brightness controls are working for them with Catalyst 13.1 or 13.4 on Windows 8 64-bit? If so then there may be a conflict elsewhere. Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm having the exact same problem with Win8 and 8.1 (updated a couple of days ago). Using a Samsung laptop with Radeon 8500m HD. Same thing happens: brightness controls don't work, screen dims randomly, I get an error message from Catalyst every time I try to change the power plan.

I read that you should make sure that all folders in the Users folder are visible (Hide and then Unhide the Users folder to be 100% sure), because CCC can't read it if it's hidden. I tried it but it didn't solve my problem, unfortunately. I see your post was from earlier - have you found a solution?
