smartphone interfering with pc wireless connection

I have a 4G android phone and when I connect it to my home wifi, my Win7 laptop cannot connect reliably (if at all). Problem goes away when I disable wifi on my phone. Using netgear wnr2000 with latest updates applied. Any suggestions?

The phone is sitting idle most of the time. I'm not a big smartphone proponent and rarely download anything of any size.

Any chance to connect the laptop with a cable for a test? As far as i can see, the router has not a lot of monitoring functions, but at least shows the connected devices with ip addresses. Maybe you can login to the router and find out if both devices are shown with separate ips there.
