GPU temp around 80-90C..is it too much?

My sister has an OEM computer from gateway, which has an older i7 cpu, and 8gb ram. We installed a 7870 XT for the graphics card, and it runs Tomb Raider nicely at 60fps w/ tressfx on and normal everything except for ultra on textures. However, the temp has gone up to 90C the highest...it usually lingers around 80C. I can't imagine that high of a temp is good...the metal around the case gets pretty hot. Would the gpu burn out prematurely because of the high temperature? Oh, and it's not overclocked or anything.

Hey,

Thats running a bit too hot, especially if its not overclocked. I assume your case ventilation is not the best as its an OEM pc. Which model of hd7870 XT did you buy? Is it a reference model that blows air out of the case, or one that blows air into the case? Also I would download MSI afterburner and create a custom fan profile to increase the fan speed. You could also try underclocking it to run cooler, but you shouldn't have to.

Hope this helps!

It's Sapphire's 7870 XT. Yeah, the ventilation of the case is not very good. But we opened up the case and it was still running at 90 C. Yeah, we have MSI afterburner...didn't try the custom fan profile though, will do it soon! Thanks.

From what I can tell the Sapphire hd7870 XT has a non reference cooler, and it blows hot air back into the case. Such a cooler is good if your internal case ventilation is good, as it relies on your case fans to exhaust the hot air out. For an OEM case a reference cooler would have been better as it would exhaust hot air through the pcie bracket.

Try the custom fan profile and report back :)

Seems like it is doing the job. Will try some more tests and see, but definitely makes a difference. Thanks!
