Is 60HZ that much better than 120HZ

So I am getting my first monitor in years, and am thinking of getting a 2550x1440 monitor, my main usage is gaming. I have heard of 120Hz monitors but with a HD 7850 more than likely won't get the full use out of it, so what do you think is better? 2550x1440 or 120HZ?

Solution
I think that depends on what you play for, if you play for competition than your much better off with a 1080p 120hz,if you play for immersion than get a 2550x1440p.

2550x1440 for me. You'd be hard pressed to see a huge difference between 60Hz and 120Hz. I will say this, however: the 7850 might struggle a little when it comes to outputting games at that resolution. Still, look at it as an investment; you'll have a great screen when you decide to upgrade your GPU along the line.

Not to worried as I will use it at medium settings till the GTX 7xx and HD 8xxx arrive, then upgrade that too! It will "Give me a reason"

I know right!! Only thing is the input delay is 28ms, the grey to grey is 6ms...

Guess 28ms isn't bad really....

not to sure think the sharper image, as i can use it for everything. I want both FFS!!

Before I bought my 120hz monitor, I wasn't figuring to like 3D much, but I do. However, I choose 120hz then for performance reasons.

120hz monitor: If a game is difficult to achieve high settings, it will be harder to get good FPS on the higher resolution. If it is easy to achieve high FPS, the 120hz monitor gives you more fluidity and responsiveness.

1440p monitor: If a game is difficult to achieve high settings, you have to lower settings for good fps. If it is easy to achieve high FPS, you get to keep high settings and have a high resolution.

The 120hz monitor seemed easier to deal with demanding games, yet still has advantages of its own when they aren't.

I primarily game, so I was thinking in terms of gaming, not other things. What do you do with your computer the most?

Mainly gaming, but the idea is that if i get a 1400p, then it has it's advantages everywhere, and for me 60 FPS with V-Sync is fine, however I do like the idea of trying a 120HZ, but I won't be able to hit far into the 60+ so the main thing if I went for 120HZ is just for the sake of V-Sync going off.

Its a bit more complicated than that. If you go 1440p, you have to lower settings a lot more than at 1080p, as you don't have the power to get near 60 FPS at 1440p except on older games. At 1080p 120hz, you can play with higher settings on the more demanding games, and if you play older games, the ones that let you not lower settings on the 1440p monitor, you get well over 60 FPS and take advantage of that aspect of the 120hz monitor. Or you can play at the same settings you have to use for the 1440p monitor, but get well over 60 FPS on the 120hz monitor.

Like I said, it is a personal choice, with no right answer, but they both have advantages.

Think I'll sleep on it but reckon I'll get the 1400p, I remember how I felt when I saw a 1080p when I first saw it :)

I've had a 1440p monitor for over a month. I struggled with the same choice you were making. Honestly, the reduced framerate sucks, but the high resolution is amazing. The answer is, get a 1440p monitor and if a game is struggling turn fullscreen off and the resolution down to 1920x1080. All you're missing is the 120Hz on older games.
