me and my friend are trying to decide what to get for his first gaming build. he would like it to be around $500 but definitely under $600. I searched up some other peoples builds and changed them to my preferences while also asking him what he would like. he isn't very familiar with the differences between parts and I would like help from people who know what they are doing. we have came up with both and intel and amd buid. the intel would consist of: Intel Core i3-3220 CPU: $130

MSI B75MA-P45 Motherboard: $71

EVGA GTX 650 Ti Graphics Card: $150

4GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz RAM: $25

500GB Western Digital Caviar Blue Hard Drive: $60

430W Corsair CX430 Power Supply $40

NZXT Source 220 Case $50

=$526

and amd:

CPU-AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz $95

RAM-G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 1333 Mhz $64

GPU- Asus Radeon HD 7790 $150

Motherboard-GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3 $68

HDD-Western Digital WD Blue 500 GB $58

Case-Rosewill Blackbone Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower $45

DVD Drive- Black SATA 24X DVD Burner $20

PSU-Corsair CX 500 $60

=$560

is there a big difference or little difference of performance inbetween these builds? and is there any other suggestions you guys would like to put? both builds would be easily upgradable for the cpus as the intel mobo supports i5 and i7 (I think) and the amd mobo can use the fx series cpu's. would there be any bottlenecking going on or anything like that? thanks in advanced

Nice build spat55
The i3 is more practical because it games fine on 4 threads, and if you really must Max out crysis you need an i7 not a bulldozer. The Intel upgrade path is more worthwhile. Mind you crysis melts PC's and is an exception. Looks stunning on low anyway.

my friend says hes not picky and doesn't really care for ultra or maybe even high graphics and I highly doubt he will be playing crysis. and I wont be playing crysis on mine either.

and so you're saying the intel one is better? is there much of a difference between that and the phenom? how about the gpu's? would we be better if we put the 7790 with the intel and ditch the 650?

im sorry but my friend made a rule for himself to stay around $500, and definitely not over $600.hes not going to be playing many brand new game, maybe only 2 or 3 new AAA games, the rest only indie games like minecraft, ace of spades, ravaged, those kind of games but he will most likely play bf3/4 on medium-high. not ultra 50-70fps or anything to that extent of quality. ill still show him what you came up with and thanks for the effort, sorry. P.S: its still a nice build like allanitomwesh says.

He would be better off saving for that build, that is the bear minimum I would go for. For $150 extra a half decent build lasting 3-4 years or $150 cheaper lasting 2 years. You could take the HD 7850 off for a HD 7770, saving $50 but then you weaken it considerably.

the games he will be playing would be like fallout 1 and old games like that with a little bit of indie games that don't require a lot with a little big games.
barely any though. so he doesn't really need something like that. and if he does need to upgrade he has a job so it wont be hard if he feels he needs to or wants too.

I'd suggest you put in the cash for the 1GB 7850,I have experience with the 7750 and 7770 and although they are great cards (much better than 650 IMO) they do suffer when games get intense (explosions, heavy foilage, falling buildings, motionblur) The 7790 is an awkward in-betweener. Get the 7850 1GB or save money and get 7770.
About the differences between the i3 and the Phenom, the Phenom presents excellent value IF you are willing to overclock. However, it gives you similar performance using more power and running much hotter, which to me is a hassle.Besides, Black Editions are really hard to get these days, and those are the ones you want.
So,Smaller power supply and no cooler on the Intel build,Cooler and bigger powersupply and maybe power bill on the AMD with mobo and CPU savings. It's a draw to me.
