Maximum RAM supported

I've got an old Compaq machine that I'd like to add more RAM to. The Motherboard specs say:

"Support up to maximum 2 GB memory (PC manufacturer's maximum memory may differ)"

whilst the PC manufacturer specs say:

"Maximum memory allowed 1GB"

What's the story? If I up the machine's RAM to 2GB, what's the worse that can happen?

Thanks for any advice :)

You should follow the PC manufacturer since they sometimes make their own tweeks and adjustments to hardware and drivers. If you add in too much RAM to a system, in some cases your computer won't boot, and in other cases you'll use the maximum amount and the remaining memory won't affect anything.

Borrow someones RAM, if it works it works. If it doesn't it doesn't. Most likley it won't as the manual states so, but it won't open up a portal to another dimention if you try. Worst that happens is it does nothing.
Also beware that while it me SEE all the RAM it may not be USING all the RAM. Fastest way to check is right click my computer and check Installed VS usable RAM.
