lan is local area network, anything on your side of the modem. wan is wide area network, anything on the outside of your modem. First get an isp who will give you a modem and either a cable or dsl hookup. Then build the lan which consists of a router, switches, hubs, and clients.

same thing as what zdbc13 said. if you plan on doing wireless etc all the routers will have lan ports as well as an ethernet/wan port with goes directly to your modem. the lan ports are what you can connect your computers to as well as other devices such as switches.
