So today I decided I wanted to replace my old CRT with a brand new screen, So I headed to the store and found a nice Samsung HD monitor, (Can't remember model no.) but It ran at a beautiful resolution of 1920 * 1080, Now my only problem is when i looked at windows 7 on it, Everything was so damn small!!, I mean the icons and taskbar were almost microscopic, Now is there a solution for this? Like a way to make the taskbar and desktop icons bigger on the screen? I could lower the resolution but that would look like crap and the icons only get so big, so Any ideas? Like is there a built in Monitor utility or something? Cause I really liked that screen and am trying my best to convince myself to buy it.

Also would a higher resolution slow things down? Lets say I'm using a GTX680 Graphics card or Intel's HD graphics 2500/4000, would it be slower compared to running at 1024 * 768?

I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Solution
1. Right click on desktop
Select Screen Resolution
Set to 1920 x 1080

2. Right Click on Desktop, select View and select icon size

3. Use windows help to find "Make the text on your screen larger or smaller"

Choose one of the following:

Smaller - 100% (default). This keeps text and other items at normal size.

Medium - 125%. This sets text and other items to 125% of normal size.

Larger - 150%. This sets text and other items to 150% of normal size. This option appears only if your monitor supports a resolution of at least 1200 x 900 pixels.

Solution
Higher resolution means more "things" will be displayed on the screen at the same time. The means your desktop "real estate" is larger. Naturally if you want to cram a lot of "stuff" into a confined space, that "stuff" must be small. The more you wanna cram into the same space, the smaller the "stuff" needs to be. That is why texts and icons look smaller on a 1920x1080 resolution monitor.

Your solutions are as follows:

1. Buy a bigger monitor that supports the same resolution. I believe 1920x1080 resolution is supported by 21.5" to 27" monitors.

2. Buy a lower resolution monitor. The next step down for a 16:9 aspect ratio monitor is a resolution of 1600x900. The lower resolution means less "stuff" is crammed on the screen so texts and icons are larger. However, the real estate of the desktop is also smaller. Therefore, you cannot have as many windows open on the desktop (and still see the info you want) as you would with a 1920x1080 resolution monitor. However, the max size of these monitors is only 22". Therefore, getting a 27" 1920x1080 monitor would mean the size texts and icons should be almost the same.

3. Lower the resolution of the monitor. Buy a 27" 1920x1080 monitor and set the resolution 1600x900. Big monitor and lower resolution means everything will look big, but you give up some desktop real estate. Also, whatever is displayed will not look as sharp as with max / native resolution of the monitor. CRTs and LCDs work differently. On a CRT you can basically set the resolution to whatever you want and everything pretty much looks just as sharp. No so with LCDs.

If you are just doing "daily stuff" like videos, surfing, reading, then integrated graphics is good enough. If you want to play games, then a graphics card is highly recommended.
