Hello, I have recently had a new computer built for me but I'm getting a really odd issue. What happens is the computer will completely freeze (Image will freeze, audio stops.) when I either 1. Tell it to shut down / restart via start menu 2. Trying to play some games, Planetside 2 and Hitman Absolution at the moment.

I have no idea why it does this, I have ran Memtestx86, chkdsk on all my hard drives, full anti virus / malware scans and CCleaner. None of them report any errors or issues. BIOS, Windows and all drivers are up to date and nothing has helped.

If anyone has any idea what might be doing it, any help would be greatly appreciated.

My specs

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Intel i7 3820 3.6GHz
64 GB of Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600Mhz RAM (8 x 8gb)
Asus Sabertooth X79
ASUS GTX 670 Direct CU2 x 2 (SLI)
Corsair 1200AXi
WD 1TB 10000RPM Velociraptor x 2 for OS and games (In RAID)
+ A few other 1TB hard drives for storage

The RAM is running under XMP settings at 1600Mhz with the correct timings of 11-11-11-30 and all at 1.5v.

I believe I have the correct SLI drivers, any idea how to update / correct? SLI does work in other games though with an increase of about 50% over a single card.

I'll do that a bit later, any other ideas what it might be? So far it's only doing it on Hitman Absolution, Planetside 2 and reboot / shutdown. War of the roses, League of legends, Far cry 3, NFS Most Wanted, Warframe and Path of exile all work so far.

Hello again, I've managed to test the ram.

I tested all 8 sticks separately, in 2 stick pairs and 4 stick pairs. The crashes still happened in the exact same places and I let memtest do 5 passes and it all passed. I think at this point we can say that either all my RAM is faulty or it is not the RAM itself.

Additionally I had a small theory, all the games I was trying to play that crashed were of a large file size with PS2 being the smallest at 8GB. I now know this is wrong as I have had Far cry 3 working which is 9GB and Guild Wars 2 which is 15 GB.

I also noticed while testing the RAM that the Boot Device LED lights up red for a short period of time during the initial start up but then goes.

Also, thanks for trying to help me with this, I really appreciate it!

Tried it with one card with correct drivers, still same issue, tried it with the other card on its own, still freezing on certain games. However when I told it to shut down, it didn't freeze and did shut down.

No, but it can be! I meant when clicking shutdown in the start menu or when running shutdown.exe.

Additionally, I have discovered pushing the Print screen key now freezes my computer too. Googling this found a fix about turning debugging off, it did not work.

How would they not be the correct drivers? As there is only the one universal driver used I'm wondering why the rather strange question.

Try the PC with only 4 x 8gb of ram, one in each slot - A1 B1 C1 D1.

Is your ram quad channel or pairs of dual channel?

Your hard drive is excessively fast, the WD site doesn't refer to it as a gaming hdd, only for songs, music and photos, movies, and only for storage purposes - http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=20

"Ultra fast. Designed around a 10,000 RPM spin speed, these SATA 6 Gb/s drives include a 64 MB cache and deliver the ultimate performance for photo and video editing.

Rock-solid reliability. With 1.4 million hours MTBF, these drives have the highest available reliability rating on a high capacity SATA drive. In addition, these drives feature a 5-year limited warranty.

High capacity. State-of-the-art technology delivers a balance of high performance and high capacity perfect for data-intensive workloads that require large amounts of storage such as video editing, 3D rendering and scientific modeling.

There is some minor refereces to using the hdd for gaming but mostly, it's about storage -

Not sure if that is helpful, though.

Already tried that RAM combination following the recommended formation by ASUS for the motherboard.

The RAM used is dual channel and the motherboard is quad channel, would this be what is doing it? Microdirect recommended this RAM specifically for this board. Link: http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/Product/54774/Corsair-memory-16GB-XMS-Kit--2x8GB--DDR3-1600MHz

Edit: A bit of googling about dual and quad channel ram means nothing but how many sticks come in the kit and is mostly a marketing ploy.

As for the hard drive, it's used for my windows installation and some games. I've tried running games off my other hard drives (WD Caviar green 1TB's) and the same freezing occurs. My previous computer also used an earlier generation of the raptor and I didn't have this issue, whether it's related or not I don't know but I thought it might be helpful.

It might be a marketing ploy but quad channel ram do exist for a reason, you may need to acquire quad channel ram for this rig if all else fails.

How about you try just 2 x 8gb of ram in the last two paired slots.

Raid, with what? You need to RAID with something, RAID is not stand-alone (or is it?)

I dislike anythiong marked "green" , it usually infers something about using less power.

Edit -
PrintScreen captures an image of the display output so it might not be freezing the PC, you just might be seeing the captured area image!.

What I actually meant to say was if the both cards were set in SLI in Nvidia control panel.

I'll try that RAM layout later today.

Uh if you mean the RAID driver, I'm using Marvel RAID. If you mean what's in RAID, it's two of the raptors, both the same model and size. I've tried turning RAID off and taking the RAID drive out, nothing changed.

As with what you say about Print screen, it freezes like it does with games where all sound stops, Ctrl + Alt + delete does nothing and I can't alt tab.

Yeah I assumed that was what you meant and I did do that, I even tried it with no GFX cards at all and still had the same issue.
