I am confused. The 670 beats the 7970 in benchmarks. Are these benchmarks wrong, or am I just overly confused?

I just want to help you buy the best card.

Personally, I own a 670 FTW Signature II and I'm trying to not be biased. Either one will last you a while, it's down to preference.

NVIDIA does release lots of drivers though, after every new game that comes out they can help boost performance.

I owned a Radeon and I had no problems. It's whatever you prefer.

I'll use Skryim as an example. Note: Skyrim is actually pretty CPU dependent sometimes.

No mods, but on ultra settings
- 120+ FPS

a few graphical mods + ultra
- High 90's

Battlefield 3 ultra (single player)
- Easily 100 and beyond

Multiplayer will give you 90+ fps easily.

It seems that they are about equal in DX9 and the 670 owns it in DX11. In some games, the 7970 wins in resolutions lower than 1080p. Above 1080p, the 670 is usually better. Plus, you have on board Physx. The only real advantages of the 7970 are on paper such as the 3 GB 384-bit VRAM. If you are spending $300-$400 on a GPU, you're probably playing in DX11. Even TH's review says the GTX 670 is better. Considering the GTX 670 costs less as well, the old AMD is cheaper argument doesn't apply here. If you can get an FTW or DCII Top version for $400 or less, that would be the best bang for your buck.
