Is A10 just what the doctor ordered?

Will the A10 APU be sufficient for heavy web surfing (multiple windows open) lots of video watching etc while at the same time enable light gaming or would a quad core with discrete GPU be a better idea? (Looking to build my first...need to get out of the "dark ages"!) Any advice is helpful, thanks.

Yup.

The 65w A10 5700 APU is a great place to start ... or wait a month or so for the Richland refresh.

Here is something you can copy and paste into your post.... then just plug in your own data:

Approximate Purchase Date:
next week
Budget Range:
i hear sub $500 is doable
System Usage from Most to Least Important:
web surfing, lots of video downloading, light gaming (Diablo 3)
Parts Not Required:
need it all
Preferred Website(s) for Parts:

Country:
usa
Parts Preferences:
none
Overclocking:
no
SLI or Crossfire:
no
Monitor Resolution:

Additional Comments:
is 6 or 8 core cpu necessary for what i describe or is a quad core (say fx 4100) just as good?

Something to consider...

MB - ASRock FM2A75M-DGS FM2 - $55
CPU - AMD A10-5800K - $130
CPU Cooler - COOLER MASTER Hyper TX3 - $20
MEM - G.SKILL Ares Series 8GB DDR3-1866 CL9 1.5v - $65
GPU - Integrated HD 7660D
HD - Seagate 1TB - $75
OPTICAL - Samsung 24x DVD-RW - $19
PSU - SeaSonic 360W 80+ GOLD - $60
CASE - Thermaltake Commander - $50
CASE FANS - Optional - 2 x SilenX 120mm 74CFM @ 1400 RPM <15dBA - $24

$498 before a few rebates. No reason not to go with the A10 if it fits in your budget. You also want the HD 7660D if you are going to be doing some light gaming.

The 65w AMD A10 5700 Trinity APU has the same unlocked graphics as the 100w A10 5800K APU.

For your tasks and budget, a 64GB SSD with an APU will really make things 'fly' ...

The above build looks perfect. The only change I would make is to go with a slightly cheaper power supply:

Power Supply: XFX ProSeries 450W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($52.99 @ NCIX US)

Both are produced by Seasonic, so there's not really a difference in quality at all.

You could also save on the case with something like the Fractal Design Core 1000: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/fractal-design-case-fdcacore1000bl The SilverStone is very nice, but it's up to you if it's worth the $60 premium, when the build is already slightly over budget.

I have a Seasonic S12 430W and it's a great power supply. I don't know about the XFX.

As far as the case goes if you want to spend less that's one thing. I would personally go with a quality one since you'll be reusing the case over and over.

The XFX ProSeries and the Seasonic S12II are internally the same power supply (both produced by Seasonic). All XFX have done is stuck their name on it.

The Fractal Core 1000 is still a very quality case despite the price. Since the build is over budget anyway, it's the first place I'd look to make savings. $100 cases on a $500 budget aren't optimal, just like you wouldn't buy a $200 case for a $1000 build.

Yeah that's certainly true. But at the same time you're not buying a video card so you have money to invest elsewhere, I say put it in getting a nice case since you'll be reusing it. You could get something like the Fractal Node 304 and that would be a good case in that range as well.

thanks for the great advice to all of you. Looks like a couple of good builds. I like the idea of a SSD.
